If you can no longer get a permit to go hunting in the Ureweras, I can't see the present custodians allowing any removal of their precious rocks, however tiny. Mind you, there's a bit of country to walk over to either dispel or confirm the rumour.
More chance of finding a moa or a moose in Fiordland. At least you know they were there once, and you could fossick while you were looking.

The hunting ban may only be a temporary thing. Even though DOC are no longer doing them (permits), The Administrative board for Tuhoe are taking over that system and may do them in the future. However, chances are, if they do, there will be a fee (no surprises there).

The Great White Tribe is called "Pakeha" roughly translated = White Meat, good luck traipsing around Te Urewera.

or even used as a lucky charm perhaps. The local witch doctor could place them under the beds of folks, and in combination with a spell or two, the future of the human race would be guaranteed.
