Me too, but all I got was................. lost!

Took us 2 nights in the bush before we found our way out to the road.

thought I had better help out with the taipo river area having prospected it quite a lot
1. try in rocky creek there are 2 ways of getting in there one from the western side of the bridge and up the track, its steep but the rewards are worth the effort, the other way of getting into rocky is to take the road over the hill and walk down the taipo and cross, this is only to be done when the river is low
2. have a go in the seven mile creek up in the gorge there is some very coarse gold to be taken and you can stay in the new doc hut "dillons hut"
3 . there is a track on the true right bank of seven mile creek that takes you up on to the top of RANGI TAIPO this weas the old road down from the mine that was up there, the old timers used mules to pack their quartz down the hill
if you walk up to the Julia hut then up Julia creek you will find gold creek. well the golds not in that one its in the creek down stream (they named the creeks wrong)

all the creeks that come in from the west into the taipo carry gold, but it is rough country.
I have a book on the area so will look it up and post again

good luck up there and remember the river is very cold and swift just ask my wife caz

cheers kiwikeith

book is "quartz reefs of the west coast" by J F Downey

reference pages 26 and 27 refer to DUNNS CREEK, LOWS CREEK, FREITAS CREEK , SCOTTYS CREEK, TAIPO GORGE, HARLEYS CREEK, HURA CREEK,

there seems to be abit of gold found in the area , makes me want to go back and have a better look

Not sure if its true Keith but I heard DOC have closed the road into the taipo. not sure of the reason why but I think the river may have undercut it somewhere.

4WD vehicles can continue as far as the end of the formed Taipo Valley Access Road but no further. The 4WD track to Seven-Mile creek is washed out and impassable.

Thanks Keith! Now that would explain why I didn't find any gold up Gold Creek!! Should have talked to you first ;)
