Public Gold Fossicking Areas
Before people go gold mining or panning in New Zealand a permit is usually required from Crown Minerals, Ministry of Economic Development.
However, to make gold panning a more accessible experience a number of
areas have been set aside where anyone can freely enjoy recreational
gold mining without the need for a mining permit. The map below shows
these public gold fossicking areas.
All these areas are suitable for gold panning and sluice boxing. Mining is restricted to hand-held non-motorised methods only. Some of
the areas are equipped with picnic, barbecue and camping facilities and
have good public access.
Information provided on the public fossicking areas is correct to the best of my knowledge. However you should always check with the Department of Conservation what restrictions may be imposed at a particular location.
