From the depths of show and tell i restore me thread.

Last couple of hunts didnt produce a lot but the last one was choice whilst out with Crisboy and Ed. Found some military items of the period 1800's. Jacket buttons, musket balls and my first victorian farthing. Was great to get out and we hunted all day nearly till dark.
Somewhere in this mix i unearthed a 1913 Edward 7 sixpence.

Trip #188
Across the Bay with Wiggle
2 goldies, 10 coins all up.
1933 NZ threepence
1945 NZ penny

Trip # 189
Across the Bay with Crisyboy and Ed.
7 coins all up approx.

Trip # 190
Across the Bay again with Crisyboy and Ed.
First spot. 4 goldies, 15 coins all up. 58th battalion buttons.
1800's UK farthing
1900's NZ penny

Second spot. 1 goldie, 6 coins all up and a bracelet.
2 of these coins were ones i had previously found here, center punched then thrown back onto the beach.

Appears to be a piece of lead which it is. A musket ball flattened out one side.
UserPostedImage

Coins from this trip. One a young victorian farthing, a first for Ace.
UserPostedImage

Best finds of the trip. 3 differant sizes, 58th battalion military buttons. Very hard to restore, some that Crisboy found were in mint condition and easily recogniseable. These buttons belonged to the red coats who basically came here to shoot at us.
UserPostedImage

A cheap version i suspect of a pandora bracelet, no silver here..
UserPostedImage

A couple of trips back. Chunky old greenstone silver ring, A smaller silver ring, a 46 half penny and the quite rare milk token that Ed found.
UserPostedImage

This is the caliber of the finds we been making.. said Ed
UserPostedImage

Modern day weapons, no muskets here. two garretts and two whites
UserPostedImage

This is what a serious trip looks like

Appears to be a chinese coin but in fact its an extra rare milk token as its not listed in any catalogues. Caused a bit of excitement in the milk token collecting circle.
Has the initials KK and GB on other side.

Well then it's even better! Looked like a 17th century one a bit like the ones I have collected over the year, that a similar size to a Nero roman coin that has appeared in the cob web filled collection of ancient coins of mine... Haven't really looked at them for a few years but I can be sure that 17th century Chinese coins are like that...
Sorry if that made no sense. :)

Thanks for the update Shane, awesome finds and great pics. I would give a nut to find a farthing, not something you unearth every day.

Hi Roy. It was in in a fairly unrecogniseable state so i used a micrometer to get the width then a google search. This told me it was a farthing. Next i gave it a soak in the ol CLR which i wouldnt recomend for bronze coins. Bit naughty i know but the only way to get a visual at least. Too far gone to get a date somewhere around 1866.

Hi Iggy. Yes i was chuffed to find a farthing, a first for me. Crisyboy found one too along with nine of the buttons. Hes an absolute wizz with that Ace 250. Shame it wasnt in better condition but a lot of beach found coins that are that old are very hard to restore. Good condition or not its the thrill of the hunt and the cleanup and id when you get home.
Hope you find one oneday too.

It is a Chinese coin, likely overstamped by some enterprising grocer to use as a local token I'd say.
That character at top is Manchurian "Boo" meaning money
The other one will give the mint, but obscured by the date stamp.

Congratulations on the farthing, they seem to be rare in NZ.

Now I look at it I reckon it's a counterfeit Chinese coin- made in America during the late 1800s. I think you should test it maybe... But I still can't be sure. Nice collection there though.

Hi Goldflinger. You and Little Kiwi are right, the coin is a Chinese one found by Crisyboy. My mistake. Thought it was the milk token Ed found some time back (Trip #183).
If you would like to see the rare milk token go to SHOW AND TELL, then go to about page 3, click on ONE PINT MILK TOKEN.
Anyhows, got ya's talkin so all good.

The Farthing i have worked out is Victorian, 22mm, 1838 - 1864.
Crisyboys Farthing he found is George iv, 21mm, 1826ish.

So.......next question is,
Does Chrisyboy want let others into the secret Mojo he uses to find such wondrous things?

Mind you, I'm, happy with the 1922 penny I lifted out of the sand today - Would be up for some regimental buttons (or ancient Chinese coins) though!

Victorian....one day.

No secret, he's just a wiz with his Ace 250, best machine in the world me thinks. A lot lighter thus quicker and it can pinpoint targets easier than the 350 because of its smaller coil. Ive seen the 250 run circles around a fair few machines. Works best in jewelry or coin mode. I hunt in all metal mode.

I see your a Garrett man, choice.

A 1922 penny is a great find and i'm waiting for the day i find a Victorian one too. Cant seem to crack that pre 1900 one.
I only found one military button the other week, bro gave me the other two. Really hard to restore once their salt corroded. Had to switch the 350 into jewelry mode to find it as the beach was chockers with space junk, presumably boat parts. Three swings later, there it was.

1922 is my oldest coin (found) Gold but I find so much rare relics I'm fine. If you want to see my trash and treasure and curios just go to my littlekiwidetecting hunts. You should make your own page aswell because I reckon we started at a similar time. I started in the middle of last year so it would be great for you to make your own page! End of the year finds

Living out in the woops makes you think harder when it comes to detecting. The local main beach is a 70k plus round trip so them trips are few and far between. With a bit of homework and google search there are some interesting places worth visiting around the area.
This time round i went to the local wetlands for a wonder, didnt expect to find much but stumbled across a couple of coins.

Trip # 191

3 coins all up.
NZ 1c coin
NZ 2c coin
UK 1975 2 New Pence

Another quick search and decided to head to a small beach not far from my local boat ramp. Through a paddock and up a steep hill to get there. Half way up, wearing gumboots, i realised how steep this fenceline track was and started getting a bit shakey at the knees, one slip and its all over.. or down. Got to the scene and 10 minutes later detecting thought, this place seems familiar, i was at my old spot and not where i intended to be. After all that i realised i could have taken an easier route, ha ha. Left my pin pointer at home so i will go back next time with ease and try the new spot.

Trip # 192

1 goldie and 2 lead sinkers.
NZ 1999 2 dollar coin

So thats it for 2015. Off to Whangarei today to hunt with Crisyboy and Ed, cant wait as where hitting some old new ground.
Have a safe new year everyone and happy hunting out there.

I'm back and i'm bad.

Sup yall, i'm back from a long spell. Moved house, stuff scattered everywhere. The Atlantisbirds Harry and Anne are back over from the UK so it was time i got my a into g and got back into some fossicking entertainment.
Went for a pre hunt to the local boat ramp/beach just to warm up for the occasion, packed everything needed, on the way i thought jeez - been a while - i feel like i forgot something major. When i got there i realised what it was - the tides, sure enough it was a high tide so back home i went..

Some days later i went to tee up with the Atlantisbirds. They had to head back this day so we didnt get to go for a hunt. We swapped some stories over a beautiful breakfast, they had some magazines and finds for me from the UK - cool.
One a lead toy from the Victorian era or maybe a little earlier. They took it to there local museum to see if they wanted it but they said it wasn't old enough... Over there they belong to clubs, finds are documented and real old finds like Roman stuff are properly certed, something like that.
Also some coins, two 1940's Three pences, two coppers which no-one is sure of what they are, one seems to be of a penny type nature and a Farthing 1928.

Well i was over near the local beach, detector in car so i went for a quick hunt that day anyhows. Felt great to be out again. Buzzing along pulling ringpull from the ground when i found what appeared to be the smallest silver coin ever. It was in great shape and had some six pointed triangle pattern on it. Later under the loupe i see 1858 - yeha - find. Turned out to be a silver (90%)1858 USA 3 cent. I think it was the smallest of the silver USA minted coins.

Trip # 193
3 coins all up.

USA 1858 silver 3 cent
NZ 2 cent
NZ 5 cent

My cool silver find, up with a NZ $1 coin for comparison.
Side showing six pointed star and date. Coin size is 14 mm
UserPostedImage

Side showing 3 in Roman numerals surrounded by a C for cents.
UserPostedImage

From the UK birds.
Early 19th century lead toy (possibly has a steel wire frame thing inside/core me thinks)
UserPostedImage

Some coins found in the UK, the two big copper ones are yet to be identified.

Welcome back Shane, I think we all need a wee break now and again. Wow that US three cent is a wee gem well done.

I look forward to eyeballing your future undiscovered treasure.
