Though I am 4 months too late to join this thread, I find the problem being people who make stupid accounts, and bots with names like '528etug719', though this could help police and searchers to find bots computer setups, they spam the site. Of the 2,500 members I will bet only 2% are actual members that log in and contribute. And some names for the actual people wanting to spam. "Captain random" "cake in the night". I think a filtering system is needed.

One of those Image tests, can help limit bots.
But I'd say most guests are users that simply have not logged in.
Sometimes people get busy with life, hobbies change, etc and they have a bit of down time from the site.

Yeah, but I more worry about the accounts. Once you have a registered account, (most likely with a stupid name) you can do basically anything on the site. Bots will most likely spam with links. In fact I remember someone who I can verify as a real person joined here so he/she could advertise, and ended up taking me to off-site link in his/her posts. Thankfully he/she was reported, but this really does need to be fixed up.

I don't want to pay to use the website- I don't have any money. I need to get money to donate, yet alone pay for my account.

As a mod on another forum, I can say paid subs don't work regarding SPAM
Sure, it culls out the spammers, but also the other 99% of active, contributing users.

The first line of defence is tougher captcha barriers, followed by moderator approved posts up to, say, 10 posts before being allowed 'free reign'.

Any anti-spam filter will always be circumvented to some degree, hence the occasional influx of Nike etc spam we get on here - which I personally take as a challenge, reporting it as fast as it arrives :)

It is of note, though, that probably 95+% of spam posts end up in the Gold section...

Maybe alter the forum so all references to "gold" changes to "Dirty Nappies" That'll stop the influx, other than spam about breast pumps....

I reckon something blocking certain things you name yourself. Read some of the names. Also perhaps moderator before you join? A moderator must approve By what you have said you wish to use the site for. Definitely add a timer which will delete an account after it hasn't been active for about 2-1 1/2 years. Just some ideas that could help.
