Hey there Bikerman!

I'm pretty sure the crowd sitting on the sidelines is actually search engine bots trawling the website. They generally come in large groups of 20 to 40 and stick around for a couple of minutes reading every post in every thread so they can go back to their masters. That's how the raw information which is then used to provide web search results is compiled and indexed!
