The first time I visited Goldsborough was a tolal bust I saw some color in the pan but nothing to add to my stash. But now I sort of understand where to find the gold and the last few trips there have really paid off nicely.

It's hard work digging down to the parapa bottom, lots of large rocks to shift and heaps of cobbles that make shoveling the pay dirt heavy going. Plus it doesn't make economic sense either, it cost me $85 in diesel to travel there and back from Christchurch for maybe $60 in gold. I must be mad!

Still it is a great place to visit and I really enjoy getting out to have a play in the creek with my sluice. Finding gold is always a buzz.

There sure are a few big rocks and plenty smaller stuff to shift there. Plenty of back aches. I've found similar quantities with reasonable stuff quite high in the gravel (behing the boulders) but despite intentions, never quite managed to get to clean the parpa properly, but its seems from all I read it should be the way to go. It is bedrock after all.

Was there still much water in the creek? Enough for a sluice box?

Not much flow in the creek, have to dam the creek to create enough flow for a sluice. I'm heading back over there this weekend to have another crack

Hi naf, the return trip wasn't so good, the water level was even lower and I had real trouble getting the right volume and velocity of water through my sluice. Still I did get some gold, 0.7 grams for my weekend effort. I did better over the Easter break, I spent Friday and Saturday sluicing before the heavens opened on Sunday.

I had no problems running my sluice over Easter and came away with another 1.2 grams. My goal was 3 grams but Sunday was a washout, I spent about an hour in the morning sluicing in the pouring rain and rising waters before calling it quits. I lost my spotter mat while setting up the sluice, just blew straight out in the strong current and was lost in the murky waters of the big hole it had dug previously. That was the last straw really, I packed up and headed back to Christchurch.

One of the first thing I did on my return was to make two spotter mats for my sluice and glue a strip of rubber matting on the bottom of my flare to lock onto the spotter mat so I will never have that happen again.

Good luck with your fossicking,
Ken.

If either of you guys want a companion going over to share costs etc, just let me know. I have a tent, two sluices if needed, and a multitude of buckets and scrapers etc. I cant drive at the moment due to medical. I arent sick enough to die getting gold tho so no worries there! :)
Cheers guys.

Hi Chris, I would be happy to have you come along on my next gold trip, just not sure when that will be. I will be tied up for the next few weeks getting ready for EQC to fix the house up. Have to move everything out and live in a motel for as long as it takes. I want to store all our funiture in the garage so that means a big dung out and several trips to the dump to make room.

So when the dust has settled I'm sure we could arrange a gold trip... will let you know when I'm ready.

Cheers for now Ken.

I was over there last weekend caught the good weather, didn't find the good gold, maybe only 0.5grams, poorer from same spots as previous. looks like the place has been busy over the summer's dry weather.

Hopefully with good weather will be back with my other half plus son during the school holidays. My son who is 6 started to get useful last time instead of wanting to divert my sluice box flows into his own channels (such is his fascination with rivers) and create great waves. So here's hoping. Anyway should anyone be over there and start talking to someone with Scottish accent, that Scot could be me.

Otherwise around weekends, I would be keen to team up with others to go golding especially if anyone is from the Oxford-Sheffield-Springfield area, and also coming from Christchurch area. Might be able to book our one car for such a trip.

It was a good trip Ash :) Shit, did you end up bending a rim when u hit that curb? I bet you still got that nugget proudly on display or tucked up nice somewhere....cant see that going on trademe in a hurry! Lemme know if you wanna go try again. My wife needs the car so I have to hitch a ride at the moment.
Cleggie, that sounds great. I'll be in the same boat soon re house and eqc except they are replacing one of my 3 car garages so you can only imagine the amount of stuff (crap) I'll have to move. Too many bloody hobbies!
