I Bought one of these, built back in the 50's/60's so pretty bloody solid, and folds up for transport... I think I bought the last one gun city had though, might be others at army surplus

Works pretty well as a Pick, or a small Shovel, or fold both out for a Mattock.

I also use a small plastic gardening spade with a neo magnet on the back for grabbing iron crap easily and/or detecting my 'tailings' once my hole is dug if I miss my 'find'.

Hmmm, well, i do carry my rock hammer as well, I'm sure between the two of them I could dig a hole like that once, in my life, and then because of the damage caused to my arms probably give up this hobby...

Dayum.

Edit:
This looks like a pretty solid Mattock head

Just came across Mini Mattocks for sale in Bunnings today - only $8! Perfect! Carbon steel head for anyone interested.

For those in Chch - spotted them up Marshlands road store. Was only 2 on shelf and I just bought one of those. Was also a head on it's own. Get in quick! ;)
