Research, research and more research into the history of an area. The apply what you learn to public land where you can hunt (parks, reserves, beaches etc) or private land where you can approach for permission. Old photo's, news articles, adverts for "picnics" etc all help to tell you what has gone on.

Here are some links to get you started in researching the history of the area:

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/

And a link which will show you where the public land is:

That may depend on where you are in NZ.

In Auckland I usually seek out the mudflats and have some good finds in rock pools, and those muddy flat terraces stretching out into shallow tidal beaches. Best day in auckland mudflats was when I found two gothic florins in one rock pool,{ 1850s florins both same year I think}. Also my only groat found {1846} was on a mud flat in auckland, near chelsea sugar works. Also found a very nice sterling silver school badge from an old auckland private school, {st cuthberts I think}. Found that in a rock pool black rock milford, auckland. Also I found my first ever musket balls in auckland mudflats. Mud is where it's at in auckland for me. If you can work out how to ground balance for salty conditions get into it.

for the sea I use my Minelab sovereign gt. Don't even have to ground balance, just straight in and its as stable as! just a low steady hum until it hits a target. Plenty good stable beach machines out there though. Minelab ctx 3030 I would kill for. Minelab Excalibur wicked! and Roy on this forum has a Whites Surf PI Dual Field . Read up on the forums!

Yes they are HS -

This is the best advice I can give you - if you are buying from overseas make sure you use Paypal (non-gift)

This ensures you are covered regardless of how the transaction goes -

I got into this hobby over a year ago & I beggged and pleaded to the missus & because she could see what this hobby was doing for me she agreed and let me have a $1000 budget for a detector -

I spend weeks looking but then decided on a Whites V3i with all the extra's - There was a metal detecting club in the US upgrading all their detectors so they had about 30 units to move - previous feedback had shown at least 6 or 7 people had alreadt recieved their V3's so all looked good - Placed my order & paid the money & sat back all excited about my new toy......

Acouple of days later I went back to the sellers feedback only to find a couple of people complaining that they had not recieved their units - I thought them to be impatient, however over the next few days this list grew to around a dozen people - I started to feel sick - Ive been conned outta a grand (fcuk) -

For the next week I was quite depressed & trying to work out a way of telling my wife - I had perposely stayed away from ebay because or the experience - a week or so later I went back to the website & read even more bad feedback from others who had been taken - it wasn't until someone there had said thank goodness they were covered by Paypal - I looked more into this and found out also that they would cover my lose & in the next few days my money was refunded & Paypal were out to get this con man who at the end had taken over 40+ people for a $1000 each ........................

Sorry bout rattling on but it is safer to shop internationally using Paypay than buying or selling on Turdme

Hope this helps (oh and you cant go wrong with an AT Pro)

I just got an ATPRO on Thursday, first quick hunt with it today and first find ever with it was a $1coin so I think that is a good omen, followed that with a thrupence, a shilling (silvers), 2 half pennies, a Chinese looking coin, lots of 1c, another $12 in goldies and 1 bottle cap.
They are very good machines especially if your going to be hunting lakes or beaches.

If you buy overseas I agree with ST, Paypal is the way to go, I've also had to get funds back on an item that never arrived.
Chances of needing warranty are slim and if you need to return parts overseas then you probably still would save a little. If you were getting a Fisher I'd buy from the NZ dealer as there is little difference from importing yourself. Minelabs, be careful as there are counterfeits out there so buying from a "REAL" NZ dealer might not be a bad idea.

This message was a heap longer but I accidentally hit the back button grrrr

Basically, Download the manual and read it a couple of times. Watch a heap of you tube clips to get ideas.
Learn what different targets sound like, under your clothes line if you have one is a good place to start as you will probably find some coins along with old wire peg springs. Learn how to dig/fill plugs cleanly that don't kill the grass. Then son your ready to worry about where to go.
Might sound a little rude but untrained/uncaring people are ruining our hobby so once your hooked you will appreciate where I'm coming from!

If you do already - I'll happily hunt with you any day! *8^)

Excellent choice on your machine, Pros and cons for both but I'm guessing you will probably stick with it as the only real advantage in having the Garrett AT-PRO over the F4 would be it's waterproof. As the Garrett dealers here price themselves out by asking over twice the price of the F4 you can see why the F4's so popular.

You also did the right thing by getting a pointer - Saves so much time and frustration.

Happy hunting.
