Cheers JW - so it's pretty obvious when you find some! :) Been picking up odd bits of quartz while in streams etc. wondering. Now I know!

It was always said that the gold in the Macraes reefs was totally invisible to the naked eye but that is not entirely correct. I used to go up behind Calleries house and in a pillar that held up the roof and which had been worked right around I used to get pieces of quartz with visible gold in them, you had to look hard but it was there.

I also know of a reef that had glowing reports written about it and yet it was barely touched. Now and again I have been there and go there and the best piece of flat quartz I have from it has three clearly visible specks in it but under ten times magnification over fifty colours can be seen. The biggest piece of gold I have from it is 4mm across, the biggest I have seen is around one pennyweight. I have found a piece of quartz in my hut paddock with a penny weight piece in it as well but dont know how to get photos on here.

About four weeks ago we discovered a reef which has been exposed by a slip on the mountain and although we have not found gold in the quartz yet then are some heavily mineralized zones in it with limonite, pyrites, arsenopyrite etc together with interesting wee quartz crystals and it is around a 500m from a known rich lead.

If I can get photos on here I shall put some on of the specimen stones which were sent to England to raise capitol for the OPQ at Waipori and the Golden Progress at Oturehua.
