Oldest for me so far is an 1807 half penny out of Hagley. Found it not far from where foiled again got his 1806. It was part of a 6 half penny coin spill. Also with it was one 1826, one 1827, two 1848 and one undateable...but George III.

.......The oldest coin I've seen out of Hagley was on a hunt with Roy1956 when he pulled a 1797 Cartwheel Penny from North Hagley.

My oldest dated coin was found a few weeks back an 1845 sixpence found in bush edge, I have a William 4th, with his head the only thing visible, completely worn on the date side, next would be an 1857 trade token then an 1860 penny :)

My oldest coin found with a metal detector was an 1826 shilling...but before I got a metal detector I used to love 'Treasure hunting' on beaches. rock pools, old dumps, deserted houses and sheds and the two photographs show my two best coin finds.

The Gold coin is 20 Lire Italian coin from from 1862 and showing Vittorio Emanuele

The bottom coin is an ancient Roman bronze Follis - Licinius Caesar 317 - 324AD

The bottom coin does of course prove in definitive totality and conclusively that the Romans conquered New Zealand, thus wiping out the Moa before Asterix on his world tour kicked them back out and left New Zealand to be later discovered by Waitaha, the people who arrived from Patu Nui-O-Aio, a land far to the East prior to the later arrival of the Maoris.

Guess the saying along the lines of "Only those who look, find" is true. My kids have cottoned on to eye balling the ground in front of me when detecting, they often find interesting items. Amazing what those kids take in, must have heard me and the wife talking about what Id numbers were most likely what. 12 Year old daughter was pulling out new coins within minutes of first using the machine (Garrett AT-GOLD). My 4 year old son loves using the pro-pointer to find his treasures (at least someone is happy finding 1c pieces)... The other kids... not so interested but that's what car boots are for.. I mean playgrounds.

To anyone who took offense to the car-boot comment - I have an Odyssey so the whole thing is a boot. *8^)

Oldest for me fresh out of the ground a week ago, an old Chinese Qing Dynasty Kangx1 Emperor coin between 1661 - 1722 AD.
Prior to that a 1873 UK Penny. Good luck out there.
