Use this thread as a start and brainstorm on it. 1: Where would attendees be traveling from, so sites can be chosen to accommodate the majority of the furthermost travellers.
2: The objectives......panning/detecting/history/etc/etc?

3: Timing..... of the season and the LOCATION v's the WEATHER. As we all know it varies from place to place and throughout the seasons. Where would be ideal, when, for what we are doing.

4: To rough it or not to rough it? Do we need campground etc or is it more of a road trip and camp at a couple of different sites, like the Lindis pass Doc site?

That was my quick brainstorm. I think it is a good idea for another get together, it could become like a kind of jamboree :)

What days are you planning? Is it to West Coast? Cold if camping? I could be up for petrol share.

As to the main thread, would be great to organize an Ozzie raid a few months ahead for a car or camper size group. Does raise issues of rent/buy_n_sell vehicle, accomodation/camping, destination, shops. Perhaps 10 days.
Would be nice to hear from someone who has done it.

When I went to Ballarat last, I am sure I was the only fella tramping about central Victoria with my gumboots and gold pan, had not rained for months and months and I told the locals I am from Dunedin and was sure some rain would have followed me...well next day it started to rain, the most they had in three months only a couple of mm, but here's me going inside out of the rain and everybody else goes outside such was the novelty. Problem is over there is finding places where there is enough water to pan in.

I have been over to "Golden Triangle" in Victoria a few times. Yes, there is really no panning at all - its metal detector country. Interesting and fun there.

The "big" trips are to WA these days - more cost though.

I'll know more after tomorrow as to what days. As for camping.....if my wife comes, it will be a cheap motel or camping ground cabin.....if it's without her then I'll play it by ear. West coast yes but will wait for weather break as apparently it's crap at the moment. I'll update when I know more. Always keen for company, especially if you have a good back for shovelling hahaha. :)

perhaps reefton could be a place to go

good camping ground, a few motels, great pubs, plenty of eating places
not to mention slab hut creek public fossicking area, gold tours, 4wd ing to big hill and plenty of detecting areas heaps of walks to gold workings

not to far to a creek that I know where someone has a claim that may let members have a pan

I would be in for another get together like the one at Lawrence, had a great time in spite of the weather and not finding much color. I like the sound of Kiwikeith's idea... I have never been fossicking up reefton way and would love to give that a go.
