Some forums have sections for members only or members with a certain amount of posts.

Do you think if we had such a thing here that more people may share areas of interest and/or where they have found/not found stuff?

I am always weary of saying too much about locations as there are so many lurkers pinching info. If for instance we had a section that only members with over 50 posts could access, I would be happy to share.

1: Would this be helpful?

2: Can it be done Gavin? Eg: is it an option that is easily implemented in the forum software?

What do you guys think?

I think.....

The value of this forum and any other specialist forum is the wealth of information publicly available to search. If it's hidden, then all too quickly the public forum would die. New members would not have a great reason to join and their input would be lost to all. This forum is very small compared to some overseas ones where such an idea might work but I think it would kill this one.....Just my opinion of course

As to the lurkers pinching info... That really is what a forum is about, giving and pinching info :) To keep things like locations to just a few members then that's what the buddy system and personal messaging is good for. I do understand the frustration though.

That's some fair points that I hadn't thought of. Thanks.

I agree with Mike. PM is available for members that you have built up a history with, give and take. Imagine if lammerlaws tales weren't there for all to enjoy, man does the gold fever run hot reading some of those.

If you are wanting to shear info with regards to spots etc PM,s are supposed to be the way to go but then i guess there are those that like to publish them on the actual forum so i guess that would probably be why a lot of guys are getting cagey about even mentioning likely areas espcially up here how many members are there and how many actually contribute anything ? i think that says it all. its what made me stop posting pic,s

I wasn't talking about posts like Lammerlaws etc, obviusly that would stay/go in the public section. I just wondered about a private section for announcements that you only want to share with other well known members. Not for example people that work for the government who want to see who's poaching on doc land etc

There's info I would share about certain parks for coin shooters etc but would prefer to only share it with others who also share. Same goes for gold spots.

A closed to public section could serve all sorts of purposes that I havn't thought of also I guess.
It would have to be an addition to the current board though and not a replacement. I too gleam a lot of knowledge from forums which I am not a member but on the other hand, I don't mind having to post a good few posts to be able to read the "good stuff".

I think it would also be a good way of getting more lurkers to post. It's pretty damn quiet in here at times and there's always plenty of guests reading.

I think it would be useless, youre worried about spots being "poached" or taken/thrashed by others yet you want a separate section to advertise your areas? it dosent make much sense. or would you just rather a forum member hammer a spot then some random?

remember no area in this world is "secret" if you can think/find it then someone else can too, also theres plenty of info on the www where people can find out info just reading it on a forum makes it slightly easier to find out, if you don't want someone to know of a place then don't publish it on a public forum as others have said theres pm and emails that's what theyre there for.

I think you took what I said wrong but thanks for your opinion. At least we have people posting. :)
I for instance can name a few parks that only have decimals and arent that old etc that may save someone the bother. Also know of another park or two that are really trashy etc. etc so It's not all about good spots, but all sorts of info.
People may not want the council or the green keepers reading it and closing it down.

Also if you were to mention being in a spot thats not a recreational fossicking area or ypour claim then by saying that you were there is admitting a criminal offence.
If a closed section was only available to members with a certain amount of posts, that would allow a little more security. Not a whole lot but some.

Obviously it's only an idea but I thought I'd put it out there and see what you think.

I notice we havnt heard from J.W. lately so lets hope he hasn't gone too. Too many good members gone and not much to replace them I'm afraid. I don't have nearly the experience they have so can't help there much myself.

Lets not let too many people know how much fun this is. The countryside could turn into a Somme like landscape

i think theres a place on the forum that should be members only for trading or posting locations that people don't want to show the "lurkers",but need to keep it open as well for information to the public to draw interest in what we do and get more registered members who may contribute to,think if you register you should get some reward,pm'ing is good but not perfect

One of the problems is that it's not just guest skimmers that leech.
I've heard a few stories of contributing members that seem to have a continuous 'momentary' lapse in judgement.

In a perfect world that idea might work but in a perfect world it wouldn't be needed in the first place.
Unfortunately it would be set to fail as it would only be a matter of time before someone ruined it.
I guess another issue is it creates another tier to the system as at the moment it's black or white (Public or Private).
And lately that line is being fudged as well.

PM is probably the best way to go as it's by your selection who gets the information.
Unless some sod goes and posts it publicly. *8^)

I like a more open forum than a secret society, my reasons are simple, I like to see who's been poaching on my claim, and wants to brag about it here :)

Well you still would be able to do that. It would only be ONE section of the forum, not the whole forum and as you have quite a few posts, you would have access to said section as well. In your case, nothing would change.

I'm only new here and don't have a detector yet, but you could use a shared Google Docs Spreadsheet or something to share info with other users.

I play a few web-based games where we do this, basically we have a spreadsheet where we store information on other players outside of our group, the spreadsheet is restricted in a sense that you have to be invited to use if via a Google Account.

Typically on the first sheet we have a list of people using the sheet, and have them assigned (or pick their own) font colour so we can easily keep track of who posted what.

On a findings/location sharing spreadsheet you could assign one sheet per user (named for each, content-locked to each so only that user can modify the info) and anyone can go check any finds, locations, etc.. You can store a lot of information in a spreadsheet.

The Google Docs also have a very basic chat feature, which is handy.. We sometimes use Google Hangouts too, but not very often.

I'd be interested in helping out with one if you wanted to try it out.

Thanks for that l0gic, I doubt this idea will progress into anything but if it does, that certainly could be an option.

Except for the NSA, and by extension, John Key. They don't need an invite.
