Hopefully after we get community moderators, Gavin can implement the Awards.

You can see how awards are working on Australian forum :

List:
http://forum.kimbucktwo....tion=faq;sa=show;faqid=5
Claiming award :
http://forum.kimbucktwo....x.php/topic,18938.0.html

* Why would it be nice?
- people would get additional motivation to go out there to find stuff

* How can one prove that he has found it?
- its all about honesty, as award is no more than a badge for YOURSELF, so if you trick everyone and show a "spill of gold sovereigns"that you made up - it is just not cool and you will be fooling yourself

* What Awards will be included?
- we will vote and see what specific kiwi awards are possible

* who will be posting the award?
- active moderator will post an award

Comment sare welcome

If we do then we should use the current system the Aussie forum has - a particular thread where you post asking for an award. Their old system where awards were just allocated from any post put me off posting any finds on there (I'm personally not into awards).

Also limited number of awards. For example silver coins that were used as currency here (a pre 1933 british 3p is equal to a post 1933 NZ one) , sovereign of course, token, etc but not lead toys, one tonne award, or the hundreds of other ones the Aussie forum had.

They have removed Bullet, lead toys and some others..
But i recon a ton would be a good one. but for nz we should split 50$ and 100$
Also, i always wanted following reards:

Intact Pocket Watch
Intact Silver/gold Cigarette case
Purse/wallet with coins

Any other suggestions are welcome

Yes, defiantly both of those. Return to owner should include anything that is of sentimental value or which the detectorist was asked to find (for example car keys) as this is good publicity for our hobby and should be encouraged.

Coins - precious metal only, pre 1947 and used as NZ currency:
Thrupence,
six pence,
shilling,
florin,
half crown,
sovereign.

Jewelry:
Any gold or platinum ring, bracelet or pendant. Earrings are normally 2 small so wouldn't bother with those and silver is not a rare enough find.

War Medal
Pre 1947 purse or wallet with contents
$100 (sorry I max think $50 is a bit low & easy - $100 is even too low for Aussie where they have more lost $2)

Unusual Antique find (this could include pocket watch, cig case, vesta case etc) Maybe have this one on a vote system where if somebody has such a find it gets nominated and seconded for an award by other members? This means some great finds that we can't forsee at the moment are still able to get an award.

Recovery & Return Award.

The object of the awards could be a mixture of easy ones ( like the silver coins) to encourage beginners and some rare ones (war medal etc) to keep the experienced members interested. But not too many.

Another thought - how about annual zero balancing?
Every year at a certain date everybody goes back to zero awards and starts again. This will avoid somebody having a reward showing 5 years from now and will make it more of a challenge or something to look forward to for the more experienced hunters ( they can go for a hunt to find a specific coin or item).

What do people think?

I think awards can be fun although as we don't have many large population bases don't expect the same results as the Aussie forum. Of course the best things we find depend on the two parameters on time spent hunting and a fair dollop of luck.

Need to check with Gavin too and see how he feels about it?

I have emailed him first before posting this topic :-)
main thing is to get support from members -if members say YES we want it, it motivates us and so on - awards will be implemented .

Its hard to get this lot to agree on anything. There seems to be opposition to any change.

If you hunted for the whole 24 hours of the day then you win 205 x 2 cent pieces. Congratulations! :)
