Topographical maps are what you're after. For online ones try:

http://www.nztopomaps.com/

Or for a bit more info (public land etc):

http://wams.org.nz/wams_desktop/index.aspx
(Click "Basemap" then select "Topo" & zoom into the area you want.

LINZ provides the maps to all Topo's online but their online charts aren't as easy to simply look at.

If you have an android phone then Backcounty Navigator is a great way to take the topo's with you and use with the gps.

NZ Topo Map - www.topomap.co.nz - is kept a bit more up to date than nztopomaps.com, and it's a bit more feature rich ;)

Great!!! Thanks for that guys! I may need to join a tramping type club to learn a bit more before I head too deep into the bush. All I know are the basics and a bit of common sense but would hate to get in danger/trouble due to naievity(s.p) as many seem to do.
I want to check some of the neat sites and locations that Kiwikeith has mentioned over the years.
