Mate, you probably want to be asking this question in the "metal detecting" (coins and relics) section.

You could compare old aerial imagery from 1941, 1965, 1973, 1984, etc. to do some research...

Best of luck ;)

Personally I think you are in the right forum. You are asking about locations so............ Akaroa, a lot of history. Try Okains Bay and surrounding areas as well. Great place.

Yeah, it is now. That's coz Gavin moved it out of the GOLD prospecting section where it was, when I made the comment.

rather than ask obvious still standing churches personally and getting the usual no, maybe try spending an afternoon cruising around and talking to the farmers and land owners. bit of casual chat about something that interests them, then slip in the detecting thing and see if they mind. there's got to be sites that have no dwellings still, or the landowners has converted or moved for their own use. i've found in gold detecting the less direct approach may produce some sort of result. the direct yes/no upfront approach is too easy to say yes to, especially to a person they don't know from Adam and has just rocked up. sometimes they do appreciate your honesty though. and the declines may relent if you ask again nicely a bit further down the track. a nice offering of a gift of some sort as a sweetener could be a good angle too. fresh fish or baking or a nice cold beverage on a hot day may be what it takes. some people just appreciate a nice old chat too. a good way for them to suss you out. good luck.

Typical of me to go off half cocked. My wife hates it when I do that.

Not exactly a target rich environment but then I don't get out very often and I don't dig deep holes. I find more recent coins than old but I have found some nice old padlocks and an axe head in same area. $1 and $2 coins at the A&P park after the Farmers Market. I lived in Chch for over 10 years and never detected Hagley Park once. Bugggggar.

My first big haunt was a bulldozed church site. Found over 300 coins and some. Spoke to the church and they were keen on me piecing something together at some stage. But thats just my story, do a little homework first before venturing in may help.
