my sluice worked well except my top riffle would get blocked up rather quick.the rest were fine tho.would this be its angle or size causing it to catch to much material?

sounds like your water flow was incorrect depth and speed, caused by angle of the box, possibly to flat.

I assume if most riffles seem to be working as expected then having one or two with build-up of material isn't too bad? I encounter this a lot, so curious about peoples opinions.

Hi gavin
Well my opinion is that if you didnt have a build up of material behind you riffle,s then there,s a good chance your gold will be going out the end as well..next time you use your sluice and you can see it,s built up have a close look behind the riffle,s if you can see wee stone,s or black sand swerling around behind each riffle then your in bisness...if its all packed in behind (no swerling) chances are the gold will just carry on out the back as it has no were to settel.

Ah, sorry - I was speed reading at work hoping none of my colleagues would notice ;) ... my issue was more along the lines of a few of the riffles seem to build up more material than the others. Always get material trapped behind all of them. Just some seem to get a lot more than others.

Well im no sluice expert but so long as you can see some movement behind each then should be sweet...perhaps some riffle,s mite be on a slight more angle than other,s..? what sort of sluice is it home made..?
i had a look at 1 of those keene 1,s couple of days ago i think A52 look,d pretty good.

It's a well made sluice box with consistent riffles.In fact it's one of JW's - http://www.paydirt.co.nz/shop/john-wilson/sluice-box.aspx
