For those of you in Auckland who want to compare historic/current aerial footage of sites the woman at the west auckland historic research centre (in henderson library) told me today of a little tool I never knew existed called the GIS viewer.

First go to http://maps.aucklandcoun...z/aucklandcouncilviewer/ accept and search an address, then click tools on the right and click Historic aerial photography. This will open up a slider in the bottom right hand corner where you can slide back through historic aerial images positioned exactly over the same site, SO much easier than comparing different photos at varied angles in the national library.

sweet! I noticed that driving down side roads helps too... I have seen a few old chimney stacks in the middle of some fields...
