Some of the more interesting objects recovered from trip 178. Note the bling sinker complete with a stone still attached.

UserPostedImage

3 unidentified finds brought home for investigation. The tarseal was harbouring a ring pull! One was a 1936 UK Penny and the other an old English BB padlock.
UserPostedImage

The padlock and penny were found alongside an old latch. Im wondering if these three items are related and for the story i would guess so. There was another large object detected nearby but i gave up digging for it after a while. Looking back im thinking i hope that wasn't the chest these items came from.

Love the Bling sinker! Only in Norfland, eh?

Had a chat to a guy retrieving his boat at your 'Electric fence spot' yesterday who lost a chunky sterling chain there last summer. Had a quick look, only turned up 10c, a couple of sinkers and a few pieces of stainless though and was already 2Hrs overdue for the inevitable ear-bashing when I finally got home.

Worth keeping in mind next time you're out there.

looks a great harbour would have been busy with trading ships back in the day, witch means sailors with money ships buying supplies look for undisturbed land close to the port traders would have gone to the ships to sell there goods, all deals would have been in cash, iam sure they will have dropped bits and pieces for you to find good look

Unfortunately roy1954 written and oral history of the area tells us otherwise.
Trade items were guns axes tobacco and clothing coming ashore from the ships and flax, fresh produce, whale oil and girls being supplied by the locals.
Barter unfortunately not cash...

I;d be happy with a Brown Bess.

My apologies if this post is a little bit of of topic. But can I recommend this the book Cannibal Jack by Trevor Bentley for a bit of history of the area and a clue for mudwiggle on page 74 of the kind of place to look for a long forgot musket.

Caring is sharing
Off to Doubtless Bay today to recover what we could from my better halfs stolen car. Her favourite cd and jumper leads were about it and thats where that story ends.

Whilst there we planned to walk the local beach with Ace and the new Xpointer to see what we could see, was a tad windy but a good time all the same. As i buzzed for hits she would dig around with the pointer to make the finds and it all worked out well. Not many top hits but quite a few iron signals so we dug them to find a few rusty modern coins 10c, 20c and 50c. Not much into diggin iron signals but do from time to time.
So we're cruisin along and we dig this signal to find an electrical cable, wasnt sure if it was the right target at first but the Xpointer said it was. Scratching our heads we look over yonder at this sign which spieled the history of the worlds longest cable reaching Queensland so i prompted a pic to go.

Trip # 179
1 goldie, 13 coins all up.

The underground cable had some dings in it so i guess we weren't the only ones to find it.

A day out in the Bay with Ann and Harry who are visiting from the UK. They brought me some UK pennys and Roman coins for my collection.

The collection of UK coins from Ann and Harry
UserPostedImage

These finds are all Roman. The smaller odd shaped ones are Half Groats. The coin bottom right was taken to their local museum but they still couldn't identify it.

Nice one Roy. I had to wait a couple of hours to finish the post because of a stormy power cut here.
The earliest penny is 1860. The Roman coins are anyones guess as they all seem quite unrecogniseable. Probably over 500 years old for sure.
In the first pic is an old small military button of unknown vintage.
Oh to find such gems here in the Bay.

Great fishing here as you say. Biggest Snapper was 13kg, biggest Kingfish was 30 kg.

Shane

Hi all.
My brother in law was looking through my finds when he noticed an item i thought was a bag tag or similiar marked the Bay of Islands.
He went on to say that it was a 2 cent coin. The story is there is a machine on the side walk that you put a 2 cent piece into. You then start rolling the handle and it presses the coin into an oval shape and also impresses the design on it. You keep rolling and it then punches two holes in the coin.
I couldnt quite believe it but he assured me that was the case.
There must have been more of these machines around NZ so there must be other designs out there.

Hi Creamer,
I've found two of those BOI pressed pennies, and seeing your post prompted me to follow it further.
I tested the two flatties against 1 and 2c (weight and metallurgy) and they didn't match, so did what I should've done first and Gurgled it....
Thanks for the prompt to solve a mystery :)

All good Mudwiggle.
Im wondering if they ever rolled a 2 cent piece at all, or did they just roll a copper disc all this time.
