I keep thinking... Since lots of gold is generally found in rivers/around them and in crevices etc. Due to them being carried down or brought up from the bedrock.

So, wouldn't it be ideal to go along the river with a metal detector (gold bug?) to find some nuggets?? And also; wouldn't this be best done to find the place with the highest concentration of gold for sluicing? Ie. best place to dig and sluice that pay dirt?

I'm also saying along the river as if we were doing it legally in one of the zones allocated for gold fossicking.

Thanks!

P.s. I am an enquiring and interested beginner ;) - (not really started yet)

I spent 5 hours up Slab Hut Creek but only found a rusty old shovel. I guess if there's been recent floods that have moved material around a lot you might have better luck?

Someone told me to get away from the rivers as much as possible as the old timers worked anywhere with water nearby hard. Up in the hills on old long dry river beds is probably a better bet.

Hi Gavin and O1G,
90% of the detecting i do is in or along the river.
Its all about catchment, there is plenty of gold out there jammed tight in the cracks, crevices just waiting for you detect them!.
O1G there is a heap of good postings on this fourm in getting started,so check them out it will help no end.
Take care
Steve

Cheers steve - might just be my detector as it's more of a coin machine. Nice nuggets there! I'm inspired again! :)

Gaven,

Only a shovel? I went up Slab Hut Creek last week and found all sorts of things, the most interesting of which were a 5 cent coin and a shotgun slug. No gold though.

That's a nice lot of gold for one day!! Keep digging :)
I can't wait to get going...

P.s. how much did that weigh?
