Okay so here is the result of a couple of hours at at an out of the way but still used park.
Not much of anything but still somethings!
Can I ask a couple of questions though please?
Does anyone else have issues with dogs rushing you and then not being very happy about you being there?
I did find a broken kitchen knife in the ground as per photo. Advise the cops?
And finally any hints for looking through disused train station? I found the demolished buildings but too many stones to dig through.

On the bright side, you'll never dig those bottle caps again, which clears the path for deeper goodies :)
Dogs will rush, but I've always ignored them completely, not even changing swing speed and they soon bugger off.
Kitchen knife - Certainly wouldn't worry the Blue Line unless it was wrapped up, or a firearm.

As far as the station, there will be a crapload of rubbish and scrap there. Look for the biggest/oldest tree nearby, the sort of place the navvies would go to have smoko, or a crafty kip.
If they're there, I always hit any big ol' granddaddy Puriri's first at a new site. They've been there offering shade for many, many years.

Stick with it LPLATES. The painful bottle tops and tear tabs only make the treasures all the sweeter when they turn up. You could try a solid knife on clearing the railway stones but I think MW is on to it with the neighbouring banks and trees

I did detect round a disused rail spur once but I found with the ace that it went off on the ballast stones (hot rocks). Also Kiwirail will hit you with some horrendous fines if if they catch you on a rail corridor without a valid Permit To Enter.
As said above check out those old trees.

Hello guys and thank you for all your advice. I will take it on board and use when I get back "in the field".
Hope to have some better results after this weekend!

Not much from this weekend but here they are from 2 hours at what is turning out to be a full hunting ground.
Minus the 30 odd can tabs and odds and sods.
Bottom 3 all half pennys 191? and one is Australian.

Nice work!

Sorry I have only just read the earlier posts. I concur – Find the oldest trees in the park and you will find old stuff under them (most times ;) – I try and put a few hours in researching locations that I dig, this can help paint a good picture on what and when places were used. Good starting point for your research is http://natlib.govt.nz/ I hope that helps a little?

keep at it. The more hours you put in you will find the ratio will swing the other way, you will only find a few trash items and loads of cool history.

Remember that any of those tabs could have been a gold ring ;)
Not a bad return for 2 Hrs, the pennies are promising indicators of better things hiding there.

Okay so a few more hours on the weekend gave up some coins but nothing major.
Had my first scrape on a coin which just happened to be the only silver for the day!
And can anyone identify the two items in the second photo?

One on the left, I'm thinking is a divers watch bezel or rotary dial off a timer of some sort, scale would help.
How much of the lettering can you make out in that centre portion?

Will measure tonight but memory says about the same as 2 crowns sitting on top of each other for size.
Letters visible are B A _ _ R Y M _ M _
Could be 3 letters missing between the b and the y. (Bakery fits though)
the second M is pretty rough so may not be M but does match at the bottom.
The grey may have slid around previously but does not move now.

Okay so getting time to get out and about has been proving difficult. At best I would be a part-timer.
However got a quick hour in at an out of the way beach on Sunday.
Had finished hunting for metal and was on the way back to the car.
Took a different path than the one going away from the car and had to scramble over a large concrete drain pipe as the tide was coming in.
Was not detecting as the concrete had the metal rods inside.
Stepped over the red colour and had to stop and go back just in case it was what I hoped it would be.
Sitting on top of the bunch of seaweed was the note you see in the picture.
Funnily enough all the seaweed got moved just in case there was more!!
I might just have some more time to go out hunting now........
