I now a have a fairly large stash of unspendable coins.
Namely rusty spendies that a coin machine wont accept and are just to manky to give to a shop. I have run some of these through my vibratory tumbler and some have come up ok enough to spend for the rest will any bank accept them or do they have to be sent to the reserve Bank in wellington?
For the old nz decimal currency I plan on sending that the reserve Bank once I have enough but I keep reading that 1 and 2 cent coins are worth more as scrap metal is that correct? and how clean do the coins being returned to the reserve bank need to be?
Also what about all the random low value foreign coins i keep finding, the aussie and Pacific Islands ones are worth keeping for holiday spending but what to do with the rest? Scrap them or trademe or will a charity take them?
Thanks in advance

I just throw them in a 10 litre bucket, once full scrap them, but totally up to you, I'm to busy out detecting to even bother thinking about the reserve bank lol

I've got a few hundred in old decimals, trouble is you need to deliver to reserve bank in person, and I'm about as far away as you can get!
...So the bucket just keeps on filling.

I normally give the manky clads a whack with the hammer to get rid of the warts and feed them through the machines until I get my can of Coke.

Foreign coins might go on TM if they're in good nick, try selling them as sets for a particular country, or as a "lucky dip". But I wouldn't set your hopes (or reserve) too high.

My junk decimals go into the compost heap, and then get dug into the garden.

...If only the early colonials had done this!

Hey chaps I have made a few hundred dollars posting my old decimals to the reserve bank. I usually wait till I have an ice cream container full and then courier them off. They are happy to pay out as apparently they are some sort of unaccounted for liability. There is a form to fill out and sent along with the coins. Money will be in bank account within a week or two usually. So yes well worth keeping.
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

Cool.

I was told that they had to be "over the counter". Will buy ice cream tomorrow so I have containers to send them away in :)
