I have found a bit of gold but haven't tried via metal detector.
My best piece is a 10.5 gram, roughly tear drop shaped chunk that many had missed by not cleaning out that extra few cm of a wet crevice.
I think most of my pickers came to me in that manner, some a foot or so deep, others so shallow my eyes would cross in my face mask.
Did some years ago make a fairly big hole in a gravel beach fairly close to home. Probably 40 or 50 plastic buckets through a riffle box, gave me elongated arms, a flat stomach, and enough flakes in a small bottle to question the works worthwhile.
Melted that lot down a few weeks back...14.2 grams, which given prices today, might see me look to regain that flat stomach. I'd at least be covering costs and getting fit again. Great site by the way.
Pics posted today (17.10.2015) My golden 'smile' occurred because the crucible broke and laid on its side. lol
Neil.

10.5 grams - that's bigger than anything I've found to date. Good going, and welcome aboard!
