I had the day off work today so decided to test the battery life of aa batteries in the minelab sdc2300.
I wrapped the aa in cardboard to make it the same size as c batteries, you can buy aa to c adapters pretty cheap if you wanted:)
The result was 3hours35min on a fully charged aa. Not bad for a backup set if you didn't want to buy c batteries.

Next you could try Lithium - they are longlife non-rechargeable.
