Uncleaned.
Made of 'white metal'
Weighs 15.7g
Reverse has evidence of steel fastenings(?)
Orientation in pics is (believed to be) correct - ie Upright
Scratches on reverse were made when Identifying composition
Flex damage to lower left radiant is as dug.
Area has also returned numerous musket balls.

I won't suggest my thoughts on possible shape interpretations found on the centre boss at this stage to avoid skewing peoples preconception

My first thought is a regimental horse brass but obviously white metal. Next thought is again regimental but once attached to a leather cross- chest sash. A regimental coat of arms faintly shown in the centre boss maybe?........... all just guesses though. Facinating piece of history regardless.

Here's an interesting link. Not saying it's necessarily Irish but deffo military I reckon.
Great historic find mate.

I kind of see a lion or leopards face in the center.

Extracted all the badge images off there and have just finished trawling through, no matches unfortunately.

I did however get a hit on a really rotted out button in my Dunno-Drawer, turns out it's NZ Submarine Mining Volunteers, so chuffed with that one getting crossed off. Fortunately I did a sketch earlier in the year while trying to pull the letters out of the crud, so I could confirm against that rather than seeing what may not actually exist once I had seen the NZSM monogram

I'll keep looking.

Have also passed onto the NZMHS to see if anyone there knows of it. There's very few sunbursts in NZ military emblems though.

If you rotate it 90° anticlockwise, could there be a scroll 'R' of the right hand side of the centre boss do you think?

No can't see a R at all. For a while I was trying to see a scots thistle on the center boss.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised.
This place has turned up so many anachronisms it's just getting spooky.

Just had a reply from the History Buffs who say it's very probably a 'Garter Star' cap badge and the only Brit regiments they could find that wore a variant of it were (in order of seniority):

Coldstream Guards
Irish Guards
Cheshire Regiment

"The central motif is unreadable which makes it difficult to identify but my money is on one of the three regiments listed above. If I had to pick one I'd give the Coldstream Guards the nod with the Cheshires coming in second."

Although at this point I can only find the Irish out here mid-late 19th century.

- Gives me a decent rabbit hole to explore though, watch this space :)
