Nice one Mudwiggle.
Sure was a great day out with a neat set of finds between us.
As i thought that odd coin out being a half penny which comes into date more with the military buttons, quite a rarety.
Surprised to see that the case wasnt a lighter but a holder of hooks maybe, very cool.

Check out that Minnie ball, couldn't imagine being struck with one of those.

Scored a silver ring out the front of that cut and a Military Royal Artillery button showing 3 cannons and a crown earlier on in the day. Stoked.
Looking forward to getting out again.

Mystery solved.
The "lighter" was driving me nuts - after all, who'd keep fish hooks in a fancy gold-plated case? But the eyes looked like fish hooks and context of a beach find matched. I had to know.

After 6 and a half hours picking away with the scalpel and magnifying glasses last night and into the wee smalls, I finally managed to tease one half of the cover off intact, and flick away most of the cemented sand inside....one....grain....at...a...time.....
Fish hooks they be.
UserPostedImage

The hooks are actually hollow, the iron long since been relocated to glue the sand together(!) and only the tin plating has remained - found that out fairly quickly as one collapsed when I scraped it with the blade. Doh!

Wife went to bed early last night as the tick-tick-tick of me pinging sand grains with the tip of the scalpel was driving her nuts! LOL

Sounds like a memorable day out playing in the sand. Congrats on ticking that bucket list (twice) MW......I like your straight shaft Minelab setup. I've been thinking of doing something similar.......one day (just call me gunna).
That's a serious cut alright .
Well done on the ring and sweet military button Shane.

Hunt 2016.23
257km
Left at 1am, with the intention of working my way down the coast on the rising tide, doing some grass during high tide and then following the tide down.
That was the plan anyway.
The trip down was awesome with clear skies, except for a huge thunderhead somewhere well south of Whangarei which was lighting up every 30 seconds with some of the most intense strobing I've ever seen in a storm. Was hard to keep my eyes on the road.
Not my photo, but this is exactly what was going on... Fantastic display.
UserPostedImage

As it turned out, all the beaches were sanded in all the way to Whangarei, so I carried on going and ended up back in the harbour. Helped out where a car had gone off the road - fortunately it was restrained from rolling further into the gully by several strands of good old #8 wire. Occupants were only shaken and stirred and wasn't long before the flashing lights arrived and I could carry on.
Discovered there's a distinct lack of beachfront real estate at high tide around the beaches in Whangarei. Did manage to pull 9 Michael Hill carrots out from under the grass at the edge of the beach which was a surprise given the hammering this area gets from the resident detectors.
UserPostedImage
Further rummaging in and around the rocks brought out a silver 3d, crusty '55 British sixpence - barely legible but my first one, and a wafer-thin young Vicky shilling, no date and worn down to silver scrap value only.
I followed the tide down for the usual pennies, decimals, trash and grey matter... And Gold #2 :)another 9Ct out of the black ooze under the sand.
UserPostedImage
Had been on the go for 15Hrs non-stop, so decided to join the traffic jam and head home.
Brought back a couple of interesting sounding clasts to crack open and see what lurks within.
UserPostedImage

Good to know I can still do 20Hr dayzzzzzzzzzz.... Sleep now.

Yeah, sorry about the snappy post Iggy - Was a hellish political games day at work yesterday and I was still in Easily Offended mode and took 'gold' as an implication. Apologies mate.

Sweet as MW, we all have those days.
Sometimes if I'm bored I play online Euchre....... Down the side there are some pre set chat buttons for quick communication mid game......"ha ha" is one that can be taken lots of ways, and often is with some rather interesting results.

I appreciate your apology and look forward to more great posts
All cool Iggy

Hunt 2016.24
Morning Mangroves again
Headed for a small bay which has a nice sandy beach at high tide, but lots of muddy ooze at low. Guessing it would be popular with locals (at high tide) over the years. Glow worm mod worked well and was able to swing over the flats without the headlamp attracting unwanted nightlife (both the flying, biting kind and the drinking, swearing kind). Got there an hour before low just after 3am and started zigzagging my way back up the beach with the tide close on my heels. Only one coin, a '67 shilling/10c. Handful of leads and three rings. Two kiddies junkers and a reasonably flashy 925 so wasn't a total bust.

Hunt 2016.25
A couple of hours this rainy afternoon with Creamer at a permission.
Lots of foil and ali flakes, but some nice finds turned up in amongst the chatter.
Almost got a full house with a Half Crown (Thought it was a 50c at first), 6d, 3d, 4 pennies and ha'penny - missed out on the shilling.
Turned up what I think was a kids purse, flat plastic tube containing three pennies.
Find of the day however, is a superb 1939 sixpence, EF or better with full detail and still has the lustre.
Haven't cleaned it other than a jet of water and currently residing in a capsule - Potential value of around $100 :)

Had a nice teaspoon, probably only EPNS, but I'll never know as it went AWOL somewhere in the shrubbery.
Gave up when I lost the mojo and dug a half dozen screwcaps one after the other.

Need to take a tennis racket next time to swat the mossies.

Cheers for taking me out. Interesting place for a hunt.
Ended up with the Half Penny you spotted for me and a couple of 5 cent decimals.
You were right about the mozzies, they snuck into my car whilst we were detecting and got me on the way home..

Look forward to our next trip, got some new ground to hunt.
