Do you need to know something, or know something that’s applicable to this forum.

Because this forum is hopefully set up to help its members to locate and retrieve a bit of gold, plus relate some of their own experiences in the field for the enjoyment and benefit of others.

There are a few members who are quite knowledgeable in the quirks of finding gold in the differing locations of New Zealands gold bearing environments, plus the "Professional" , or just "Make it yourself" , manufacturing and use of the best types of implements to employ in your searches, be it by Sluicing/Dredging/Crevicing, or Metal detecting methods.

So, if you have a desire to find an answer which may be of help to you in any aspect of this hobby--- join up, become a member, and just ask away.
A current member is sure to assist with your query.

Cheers---Colin.

P.S. The first “Tip” is :
To find gold anywhere.
You have to----- “Go look for it.”

Thats the Spirit J W.

Nother Tip:

And when you pan, or crevice in the river, the best advice you can get is that gold sinks!
If you should be lucky enough to find a Crevice/Fissure full of gravels and mud that looks like its been there for a long time, especially if it runs straight across the flow of the water, clean it out as much as you can, and scrape it right down to the bottom. Because, it’s in the Stuff down there that you are likely to find gold.

Cheers---Colin.

Hi all,
If you are new to detecting and are not having much joy a good idear is to get your hands on a smallish piece of gold, maybe a half grammer or smaller.
Place the gold in a test pit or even better take it to the area you intend to detect and see just what your machine can do.If your detector does not have the sensitivity to pick up the target you may wont to consider another detector.
If your detector does pick up the target ( even if it is at only half an inch) at least you know it does WORK and it is not faulty!.
Be prepared to dig a lot of junk, stick with it and you will be rewarded.
Happy detecting
PS it might pay to put ya gold test piece in a small plastic bag just to be safe.
Steve

Hi All.
I too Superglued a small gold piece onto a plastic milk top, drilled a hole in it andd tied a mtr of strong builders line to it(so that it wouldn`t get lost) to use as a test piece, took it down to the beach a few times whilst I was learning the quirks of my new detector, but it seems that the salt water softened or dissolved the super glue and somewhere it came off (Damn). I never found it,Big beach and rough tides).(maybe Superglue dosen`t like milk tops?)

Regretful prospecting.

Cheers---Colin.

Hello Steve.

It should be "one drop, drops off".

What makes you think that there is not some "Good" gold to be found here?
I am sure that if you look in the right places that you will be surprised at the Good gold that lies in limbo where most do not look!
"Damn the creeks, full steam into the bush" {Look to the skys)

Many kind regards---Colin.

Well you won't like what I have to say then. There was a patch of beach "somewhere on the Buller" that my late father in law took me to. No big stuff but lots of fine stuff under every rock, in every patch of moss and grass. Because we always found something everytime we went there, it got BORING!

I love the research side of things and being able to investigate different areas, apart from one area in Murchison which I love spending time cos it is so neat, with the falls, rock, kayakers etc.

Have to get access across farm land from Hinehaka Rd just west of Murchison. There are two exits. Where the Buller river turns left, there is a beachy area downstream. Watch the electric fence but you should be able to scramble down the bank easily. I'll have a look on Google Earth and see if I can get a view of it. The spy satellites don't like Murch very much so good views are hard to find, at least the Howard area is clear now.

Isn't Google Earth a wonderful tool?

I don't know who owns the land now. It has changed hands since the last time I was there and my mother in law wouldn't know. The people in the house in the pic may know but there are quite a few absent land owners who get a manager in. There is a fence on the road side, right on the curve, that marker I put on should ndicate the place.

Remember what I said though, only small / fine stuff but there is something in every spot, some better than others. If you spent quite a bit of time there I think you may do quite well though I doubt if you would get rich, but you never know. The Buller changes course all of the time, just like the Matakitaki, which is also a braided river. There's a guy on the East side that has been working for over ten years, really pees off the farmer who owns the land.

Happy hunting guys
