Hi Folks

What are you guys using to dig plugs with and where do I get a good one ?
I've been using a putty knife I serrated and it works great but lacks the depth.

Leaning towards the Lesche

What's your thoughts or pics of your own

Cheers

hi guardian,

i don't dig plugs. i detect for gold and the ground is all rock so i use a pick.

what might work is a little gib board knife. they have a blade of about 25cm that tapers to a point. they have serrated teeth like a handsaw and would be strong enough for soil, light enough to carry around.

i'm sure someone here probably has some better ideas.

Pretty hard to beat a Lesche for digging plugs.
They are available serrated left or right now too.

There are some accessories that just can't be topped. A Pro-pointer is one example, but for digging plugs etc the Lesche is another. You will end up using your digging tool to pry in stony ground etc even if you tell yourself not to, and most cheap diggers or garden type trowels will break. But the Lesche is as tough as you can get.

Another alternative is from Predator Tools (google it). This is the original Lesche, but the designer George Lesche lost the naming rights so started up Predator Tools in competition. The quality of the Predator is meant to be slightly higher then the Lesche but when I approached them I never had any replies to my emails.

If you do get one of these or any other tool for digging, give it a sharpen on a grinder then keep it sharp with a knife sharpener. It can make the world of difference around tough stringy roots. I also use mine a lot on rocky beaches and found it rusted fast so sprayed it with an epoxy paint. Of course it wears off in the high use areas - but the wear removes the rust in these places as well and the epoxy keeps the rest rust free.

I have to agree the lesche is great for plugs and very strong in rocky areas...you can buy them off rgmcbrid on the forum here..he ships anywhere in NZ.
