Hi John.

Not only is Gavin in a T-shirt, but he’s wearing “JEANS”!!!
He must think that he’s still in the “Old country” (bloody mad, and bloody cold too I say.)
My old man came from the lakes district in Cumberland, and he always said that the South island in winter was so cold that he always wore an army greatcoat, and was still cold.

Regards---Colin.

Hey JW - thanks for taking me out - had an awesome day and picked up a few good tips! Nice to finally meet you in person too :) Hopefully catch you again another time.

I'm starting to think I'm jinxed - gold does seem to go in to hiding when I'm around! :P

Think I left that DVD behind? Thanks anyway. Robyn was asking about getting some videos online - get her to email me the details and I'll see if I can help out.

Colin - in my defence... I did have thermals on under my jeans ;) I was starting to swelter it was so warm! Hot work when you start trying to dig in to ground that's turned to concrete from the ice. Beautiful day and awesome views!

Gave Mace Town a miss on Sun as no-one we knew had been in for a while so didn't know if any of the tributaries had frozen over to make things treacherous. I'm still a little green off-road so figured best to leave that one till summer. Ended up heading out of Cromwell and up Nevis road instead which was fun. Did come across a local policeman and fireman who has both got stuck in the snow and were being pulled-out by other locals - interesting to watch and a good warning for me to take it easy up there! Had a little detect around but only found more spent shells and had my mate in tow who was getting a little bored.

Gavin,
One of my mates headed up the Macetown road in the middle of winter to do a bit of goat shooting one year, and the water that got splashed up onto the gravel as they drove out of each river ford was freezing behind them, so on the way back they were sliding into the river at each crossing!
A snorkel's a good idea too for driving up there. Just gives you that assurance that you're going to get out if the river rises a bit. Well worth the investment if it saves your motor being swamped.
Good luck with the detecting ;)
GT.

Hi GT, heard some similar stories myself about people having trouble driving back out the rivers due to ice. Never knew it was because of their own splash water. Would never have occurred to me. Probably a bit advanced for my level of experience at the mo! :P

Glad I decided to give the Mace Town trip a miss for now then!

You're making me very green with envy all these postings of gold findings - I want to get back down there for another go now.

Very encouraging to see there's plenty still to be found :)

Hi JW.

I thought that you had picked up an 18.5 gram nugget down there?
And didn`t you find a 1934 Silver Sixpence too ?

Could be mistaken.

Cheers---Colin.

Cheers JW,
I think I know the guy you are talking about Mr Mark R,I sold a small amount of gold to him a while ago.The legendery Danny Walker springs to mine in the dredging department.
I meet a bloke about four months ago who had just returned from a day trip up the Lyell. He had just under half an ounce for his days effort!I asked him what gear he was using and all he said was a pick, shovel and box.
Nice looking gold, that 18.7 grammer sure is a fine piece.

Happy detecting
Steve

Hi JW,
I havent been out for about eight weeks now, heck I sure am hanging out to get back out there.I have been over a lot of the easy access areas and now I am heading further upstream in me kayak to try me luck.
Yep the guy that has done well in the Lyell heads a fair way in,some where past the old battery site.
Take care out there and happy detecting
Cheers Steve
