Earlier in the week big swells up to 8 meters were predicted for the eastern side of New Zealand. Im going to check my local beach (which I have photographs of) to see if there has been any cut away or erosion. Will let you know how it goes as going out shortly. Suggest others may want to check their local beach? Im sure that is where the mother lode is hiding. I have been at the beach several years ago and seen coins poking out of cut away dunes. You just had to pick them out with your fingers!

Latest Western and Eastern Treasures has arrived. Has the Minelab CTX 3030 with GPS on the cover. Probably be able to afford it if I sell both the cars. Thinking of putting the hat round to buy one for expat. Stop him getting lost in the snow. Cheers Mike.

GPS on a detector? of course i've heard of this but it's got me thinking.

i can see that gps may help plot finds over a large area, such as coin dispersal on tides across a beach. in terms of gold detecting i wonder though. would you plot each single find in a small area? really the ideal would be to plot 3 dimensionally such finds. as gold is found often in layers, plotting where it is to a depth is just as important to its location as gps would show it in 2 dimensions

how accurate is gps these days? i think in a small area you could probably remember your finds. and as for posting the co-ords online?! i would think gps would be more helpful if it showed you the gold. i guess it would if you are reading someone else's co-ords. but then you would be just going over the same spot.

i think if i had a digital display and gps i would end up spending too much time referring to this and end up over a bluff in these parts.

Hi. Have checked the local beach (Woodend) and the sand has been lowered at least a metre down in the tidal zone. There is a hole dug out a bit further up the beach but no real erosion has occured up by the dunes. Perhaps if someone had a look at New Brighton beach they may be able to comment on that? Cheers Mike.

Chch - I've noticed on my runs that there seems to be a bit of erosion into the dunes just a little north of Waimairi Beach (past the houses, more in line with Bottle Lake Forest). I guess being a bit north of most of the housing there's probably not going to be as many treasures locked away in the dunes.

Big swells = whoop whoop = I'm going for a surf! Brr... winter wettie + hoodie + booties + gloves!

I could walk down the beach from here except there is a wee creek in the way. If I got a trail bike I could ride up and down the beach to look for a better place to try. Also who is to say things will be found in the same area where they were lost? Hunting either side of the people zone may be more rewarding. Dont tell poohbear otherwise he will be there all night. We all know he likes the beach. Might go look at another beach and then some refreshments.

Cheers Mike.

Yea Gavin is right. I have since checked spencer park beach which has lost a lot of sand. Went to north brighton and the sea was close to the dunes. Went into north shore and went out on the beach from the end of Stour St I think and the shore had approx 1.5 metre drop just out from the dunes! Erosion is our friend. There you go, chance that didnt seem to occur last winter. Didnt do any detecting as it was raining most of the time I did this. New Brighton would prohably be the same.

Cheers Mike.

Sounds good! Now, where have all the coins been swept to? :)

Sunday looks better than Saturday for beach hunting.

When my new Minelab CTX 3030 arrives I will send you a copy of the google map with all my finds including the depth and the time. Then you will know where not to look. I think the beach drifts south. Best we go to Sumner. Havnt been there since 1st earthquake. Have ridden my bikes there a lot but knocked that on the head after the big rock dance!

CTX 3030, Mmmmm... chance would be a fine thing.

Who's up for a beach detect this afternoon?

I am, Peter is. Who else?

I'm thinking we start at Poohbear's Roman coin hoard (as we know there SHOULD be coins there), see if they've been shifted/exposed, then go from there.

Ash got an old 10c (way to go, buddy!)

I got an old 5, 10, 20 and 50c and one fake ancient greek

Peter got 1 fake ancient, probably roman.

The fakes were further south along the beach than Poohbears original find, and at the high tide mark. Unfortunately we got there near high tide, and by the time the tide was heading out, it was raining and turning shitty.

Maybe tomorrow.

There is hardly any trash on the beach, it's all be swept away somewhere. We just need to figure where the heavy stuff has ended up.

The fake greek I found was a copy of an Athena Tetradrachm

"'new style' tetradrachm of 220-197 BC -Helmeted head of athena/ Owl on amphora"

Last coin on this page http://69.55.175.34/druc/greek2.html

http://etc.usf.edu/clipa...49/44649_athens_coin.htm

A shame it's not real...
