Does anyone know where a person can buy some mercury?
Or does anyone want to sell some?

while on the topic of mercury, has anyone found much while in the creeks and rivers?

i've been getting a few bits of what looks like mercury over summer. started keeping it. it only shows up after i have panned up the sluicebox concentrates.

there are just small but if you added up what must be in parts of the stream there must be quite a bit of the stuff.

Hi Simon,

yep a see a bit from time to time,

the claim I am on is just below the old stamping battery,

sometimes it turns up in mass, coating the smaller bits of gold completey,

Have also seen seperate balls of it sitting on the bedrock about the size of a large marble,

If i can get to it i get rid of the stuff,

Steve

It is well worth keeping as it isnt exactly the cheapest of stuff to obtain if you need to buy it - I have a bit here which I got from a stamper battery years ago but for some reason have kept it...more about that in my thread...one day.

Although I am talking of a fair while ago as a kid I got a lot at the bottom of Tobins Track on the Arrow in the actual river so if you are near there mineforgold then it may pay to see if you can find some. Back then I do remember there was quite a fair bit and if recovered could well have suited your needs.

Theres a bloke in Dunedin - a strange character - sallow pale complection - look like the grim reaper - Death - used to live at home with mummy while he waited for the right boy to come along - he has 400 pound weight of it! Getting any out of him would be like pushing butter up a hedgehogs arse with a red hot poker.

put water with your mercury it will keep it stable as you use it each time it will charge its self up .

Interesting - water on top of the mercury suppresses the vaporization for anyone who didnt know as mercury will slowly vaporise at room temperature out in the open. It also prevents inpurities forming a skin on the surface, especially oils.

For those who dont know what charged mercury is there is mention of it in this article - the bonus aobut this article is that it is of interest to all who are interested in Goldmiing and Goldmining history.

http://nevada-outback-ge...e_pages/Amalgamation.htm

At this point I shall be honest and state that I did NOT know about charged Mercury so looked it up and the very interesting above reference is the result - there is a big bottle of mercury sitting by my bed which I panned out of the dirt at an old gold stamper site in the hills. As a kid at school we used to get mercury oxide and using a bunsen burner and a charcoal block used to turn it into a blob of liquid mercury - we all did it as part of chemistry - in those days we were never told about 'As mad as a hatter' or mercury poisoning and if OSH found a teacher doing this with the pupils now then all hell would break lose.
