Ancients roads of various ages have been discovered 7 metres below the current modern day ground surface whilst workers were digging for a new subway in Greece.

Previous finds included graves filled with treasures.

I'm amazed that the ground surface built up 7 metres over 1800 years.

Maybe it was just due to landfill the same as we do now with our rubbish etc.

metal kiwi:

could be landfill. seems like a fair height. i can understand how they would build road after road on top of one another but i doubt it would add to 7 metres. plus all the roads sounded like they were down deeper.

You will find that most ancient cities have been built up in similar manner over the years - certainly in that part of the world. A combination of moving sands, natural or man made destruction and the lack of hydraulics. Each cities remains becomes the foundation of the next one.

Not surprising considering that even today in Rome they are still doing excavations for new buildings which stumble across forgotten shops and roads dating back 2000 years - underneath the city there are complexes of hollow grottos, caves and previous buildings which can be accessed even after all hundreds of years...great stuff.
