Came across very nice post on Au forum :
http://forum.kimbucktwo....c,11672.0/topicseen.html
about roats and people posting their finds.

Has any one of you found one?
I would belive the only chance is for South Island people, but hey... maybe we can find in auckland as well.

I wish please.
I suspect you are right about the South Island being the best chance Max.
Also Australian hunters do seem to find several early 1800's coins that are not so common here.

I think it is more then feasible to find one up here in the north as well. I have found a 1/2 crown dated 1844 as well as pennies in that date range on the island. If they were used in Australia then they would have been brought across to NZ as most ships from England called into Aussie first so the same coins would have been used on both sides of the Tasman. But the problem with Auckland is most of the areas people frequented in those days are now under enormous sky scrapers and tarseal..... The Russell area could be likely for such a find.

A Groat is way up near the top of my wish list. They will be in NZ but being such a small coin and with the age most likely deep, they will be a difficult target. Double check all your Thrupence's! :)

Very interesting Tonz.
You must have got on to a really old spot to find those close together.
I have managed one Gothic florin so far but no sign of any Groats yet.

If you want an intact bullet then zip down to -38.676418,176.810268 Camp site at the end of Okahu Rd, Whirinaki Forest Park. Every metre of swing had a target and every target was a un-fired bullet. I gave up after digging 5 live bullets in a row before checking the rest of the area trying for a different tone. Lots of deer hunters preparing their gear I reckon!

Max, each of those items on the wish list is very doable. The sovereign holder is right up at the top of my list as well, even an empty one. One day!

Good luck with the Etrac!

what haven't yo got one of Graham? The sovereign holders dont sound like they would be too common, esp. ones full of sovereigns!
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!
