There seem to be a number of coil swingers in here... What do you think about a dedicated forum for the detector brigade?

Cheers Overdog ;)

Actually - at some point when I have a little more free time on my hands I plan on asking forum members what they'd like to see on the forums...

Simon pm'd me with the suggestion of having a private members only area not visible to general public, but not sure how valuable this would be myself and can think of downsides for all of upsides. Perhaps other members could think of reasons it might be good?

I also figured we could have some fun medals that could be awarded to members: "Cankerous bastard", "Old fart", etc.

Also the ranks could be customised to something a little more gold miner / fossicker orientated. Again looking for something fun.

Gav ;)

A forum locked away from public view can be very handy for discussing things that you would rather not be spread globally via the great all-seeing google monster.

But a the end of the day it still doesn't afford real privacy as anyone can sign up to be a member and view the hidden section. My worry is that people might get a false sense of security and post what they perhaps shouldn't and get themselves in to trouble.

I noted your points which have a great deal of merit but a members only area might also induce other people to strengthen the forum by becoming members rather than stalkers!

Hi Lammerlaw, cheers for the input - thought of this one too. Wouldn't this simply encourage people to join but not participate which is just as bad? The number of users go up - but contributions stay the same.

I'm also a little worried people will start posting exclusively to the members only part and it all becomes one big smorgasbord board of topics so hard to dig out stuff you might be interested in at the time.

Another reason for not to hiding forum posts is that it's good for Google to index content. Someone who doesn't know about the forums is Google'ing "sluiceboxes" one day and finds the forums in the search results, they then think "cool" and join up after reading some of the wise advice shared by existing members.

Anyone else have any opinions on this either way? I've not heard any arguments which have convinced me yet. But if the community wants it and enough speak up I'll probably add it.

I've run various forums in the past ... Gavin is right ... private forums can become a distraction resulting in the rest of the forum getting neglected.

I also disagree with the seperate Detector forum ... I myself don't have a detector, but have found the threads here interesting to read.

Forcing me to look at a different forum ... it just won't happen ... I already do enough reading researching places to go looking.

As for the ranks / medals ... totally agree.

HI Gavin,

I was wondering if you could bump the forum software up to v1.9.5 - this might fix the RSS problem (RSS updates keep coming through all the time rather than just when a certain topic has updated) and will give us CSS3 themes would look rather pleasant.

Cheers.

No worries - on my list of things to do - just not had the spare time to chuck at it though as will need to give a good test after the update to make sure nothing broken ;)

Not bad... maybe add "fossicker" between "Greenhorn" and "miner" too?

rankings can be fun.
as for private rooms, they can be a two edged sword.
other forums/message boards i have been on have had them. they are good to give the frequent posters somewhere to have a quiet word, but seldom get used beyond that as most post was done in the 'public' rooms.
on some they don't show all the rooms until you are signed up and others have had rooms that open up as the post count of the member increases.
in all cases the posting did on the whole remain in the main public rooms.
'hidden' rooms don't remain secret though as it's easy to let slip sometimes and there isn't always a mod' handy to clean up quick enough LOL!
