Hi all, have a Garrett Coin Hunter Groundhog, which are the 15khz gold finding machines from 1980. It looks mint but the normal volume is not there, or only occasionally. It's a fault with the audio. I can see the meter working and operate the discrimination etc. To send to Garrett for repair is about $200, so not really worth it..

Does anyone know of someone who can repair these units in NZ?

Thanks,

Peter

Well because I'm a tinkerer, I pulled the unit apart again and moved every component I could and now it's working again and I can't stop it. So it's "fixed".

But still the question remains - who, apart from me accidentally, can fix these units?

Hi G Hads 1. I dont think there is anyone. Most people seem to pull them apart themselves, poke and prod around till they start working again.
Good to hear you fixed it yourself.

I have suggested to several hunters that they try their local electronic service company.
Although they are not specialist detector repair centers they can often sort out the loose wire, dry joint, broken switch type faults. Check what the minimum charge is before they start might be a good idea.

Hey thanks for all the replies. I found a guy! - Custom Electronics in Katikati - Alan Blake - [email protected] , 07 5490381.

I found Alan though Trademe where he sells components. He gave me a few bits (very close to original) to try ($5) and lots of explanation and good advice. As the unit is still going, I'll wait until it stops again before I operate. Alan of course does the repairs too, VCR's, printers, steroes etc etc.
