Im new to this forum, but I'm interested in getting some equipment and going to have a look for some gold. Im interested in using a small backpack suction dredge. Im wanting to know if anybody can help me understand the rules so i don't upset any body. There are public fossicking areas, but your only allowed to use none mechanical means. So I'm wanting to know how hard it is to find or buy a claim that i could use a suction dredge on.

Cheers

Claims are stupidly complicated to get and will cost you a fair amount of cash, for someone who is just interested in hobbie dredging I do not think it would be worth your while. If non of this fazes you however, you can go on the nz petroleum and minerals site and find the forms there to fill out. You will most likely want to talk to some folk here who have claims as to some of the finer details.

Thanks for the reply. I have looked at the NZ Petroleum and Mineral website and looked at the forms. But I couldn't find anywhere on the forms that states a location. On the maps i have noticed that almost every river or stream around Queenstown has a claim owned on it already. I would love to hear from somebody that owns a claim and can give me a little heads up on the process needed to get my own.

been there done that ....
be prepared for parting out over$10 grand depending where you are

you have to pay
crown minerals
doc or land owner
local council (maybe for resource consent)
iwi
if in a bird area then a bird survey
linz
and add a couple more just for the fun of it

don't forget your annual payment each year to doc and crown minerals and or landowner

typical govt depts. create a paper war with lots of fees. gives you the impression they don't want to bother with amateurs kiwikeith. just the big boys and their big cheque books.
