Anyone know why, from a geographical sense, alluvial deposits of gold are not present in Taranaki. I know the Boars Head Mine was a relatively poor venture though quartz reef mining? Don't actually know if placer deposits was ever looked at in great detail?

Why is the Naki no good? Have heard that is it because of the volcanic underlay.

Its a long video but it explains what the current understanding of how bigger deposits are formed.

Of the top of my head you needed a constant fracturing of rock followed by boiling water to form the quartz, you then had to have a chemical reaction with slate to get the bigger nuggets. It is much more complex and I suggest you watch the video.
