I prefer to detect multible targets over a section, marking their locations as I go. Then I return with pointer to see if any are near the surface (I don't have my pointer or digging tools on me when detecting). And depending on remaining light or my patience I'll detach my detector & begin excavating deeper targets.
At the beach it is easy enough to make a cross in the sand, and I pile a 3 rocks up on stoney rivers. In parks & bush I'd use a few sticks or pile up some lawn clippings.
It can be very difficult to find these crudely marked targets, even when you know the general area where you found something.

Now I have a new solution that stands out in twilight; I sharpened some icecream sticks & painted them:

Make sure you use oil based paint, as acrylic rubs off.
And place them all in the same direction so they are easier to find, North or a nearby land mark.
I find just laying them flat on the ground makes them standout loads.

8 yr olds are the worse. "Is it detecting the bark? Is it detecting the rocks?" That's why I don't go to beaches.

Not sure it's going to be an issue, I'll be headed off to the wilderness in the South Island. (is that down your way?)

Yeah, I've had no luck at beaches.
Sometimes they are as rubbish filled as parks, I found some electrical waste (possibly off boat).
Copper scrap is a nice find.
Also from what I see at beaches the finds are ruined by salt.

Many parks have had a structure on them - so the ground is filled with junk, or even gardens are filled with nails & such.
Really you need to search the beaches for recent drops.
Lucky I didn't spend too much time over at the Mount, as there is guy with a good detector that goes over that area & he probably cleaned it out.
