Gabriel's Gully has a public fossicking area... although I doubt you would find a lot there. The valley floor where the fossicking area is has been filled with many meters of sluicing tailings from the old timers. You can still get colours there. Perhaps someone will offer you the use of their claim...
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

I once found a 1.0g and a 0.3g nugget on a beach near Dunedin. I was detecting there after some sand had been washed away and the bedrock had been exposed. Its not as crazy / unlikely as it sounds as there are quartz veins and quartz gravels that are widely but in low concentration gold bearing nearby.
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!
