After seeing the Derringer emerge from a lump of crud the other day, I regretted not doing a before and after shot.
So, please feel free to post any of your "As Dug" alongside the subsequently cleaned items.
Not so much the muddy coins, but anything that is really tarnished or has accretions.
Grungy 9Ct rings, brooches etc.
Obviously, don't go nuts and ruin whatever it is, just to get a nice sparkle!

Here's one off the beach today - looked promising with a wee bit of shaped metal sticking out (at B), but turned out to be ali, probably the head off a spoon handle.

I've got a few others which I'll add when I find them

You can see why I thought it was gold (that black mud weighs a bit too).
[any tips on reducing muddiness will be certainly welcomed - I really was laughing about how appropriate your forum name is throughout my very low tide adventure]

Nope, just the standard ammonia for an hour or so, then a going over with some Brasso on a cotton bud.

I tried the Dremel buffer and jewellers rouge - but even on slow speeds it was enough to either grab and mangle the shank or throw the ring across the room.

Yep, I've tried shining up Kauri gum with a soft buffer and it begins to melt after a few seconds - care is required.

Today when recovering this, I assumed it was a rusted bottle cap - put it in my finds bag anyway; the backside rubbed off in amongst the others, and then I realised it was a coin! Here I remove a bit of the worst side:

So do collect everything, because you might get silvers or who knows.

No, the coin had long since disemboweled itself (a scratch in the copper plating allows the iron core to start corroding. The corrosion swells and the coin literally 'bursts'...very slowly, of course.

UserPostedImage

A bit of tapping and whacking and out pops what I think is some type of marker ( but could be wrong)

Found this blob the other night. Can't make out if it's metric or imperial though.

Looks like you have been "working on the railroad". That spanner looks like a whitworth NZR spanner to me.

Cool thanks ...... A long way from any railroad though, well about 20 clicks or so. (The dazzle sprayed bolts are just a work related back drop)

Cheers Iggy

My first of this design 6d. Missed out on the silver, but will do as a placeholder for now.
Really hard to only polish half a coin!

Here is a interesting homemade brass ring I found last night.
Actually thought it was made from a steel pipe..... Started to get stuck in with the dremel and moments later as the heavy tarnish/corrosion was dissapearing the yellow appeared.

That's one nice coin MW, nice job on the cleaning. You haven't lost any detail either, which can sometimes happen.
