Ok, I've set up the next idea for evolving the forum aka "community" to the next level - http://community.paydirt.co.nz/

Give it a whirl and see if you like it, nothing's set in stone - we're just dipping our toes in at the moment to see if we like it.

Highlights:

  • Drag and drop photos into your posts (I think that's a big one!).
  • Links to youtube videos automatically become embedded videos.
  • Social logins - if you want, use your Google, Facebook, etc. account to login so you don't need to remember another password.
  • Powerful search functionality.
  • Very mobile phone friendly.
  • The site learns to "trust" you giving you more powers to edit more and more things (no just your own stuff). This will happen slowly at first until the community gets active.

Let me know if you notice any issues. I spent the day putting this together and it's getting late so I could well have missed a thing or two along the way.

Let the experiment begin!

Please keep in mind that if we do decide to move to the new "community" the existing forum will be preserved in a read-only state so we don't loose any of the knowledge it contains.

I can see you've registered, but not clicked a link in the activation email it should have sent you. It's not lurking in your spam folder is it?

I'm testing the email process myself and there does seem to be a delay. I'm still waiting too. I may need to chase up with the email service!

Will post update when I know more...

Hi Gavin
With a new site,
will everyone be automatically sent there.
will we all have same login and user names.
or will we get to login with a new name.

All good.

I don't have any spam filter installed - unless Vodafone shot it while it tried to cross the border into their servers.
Checked the online webmail as well and nothing in there either.

No issues with various other fora to this addy.

If you're still waiting - must be at their end?

Hi Mudwiggle, it's definitely an issue with email. So not you. Still looking into it, but for now I'm manually approving registrations so there can be a delay until email gets fixed. I've approved yours, so have a play ;)

Requires re-registering I'm afraid. But this is quick and easy, well, once the email issue is fixed anyway. For now I'm manually approving new registrations.

The image thing is a lot more painless.

Created a Sandbox thread in Meta for playing around (anyone feel free to use it to try things out)

I note it will only let "New Users" post one image/post.
What's the number before multiple images/post?

Could spawn a lot of duplicate threads by people requiring several images (i.e. Item Identification queries etc)

Is there a max size cap?
Could I suggest 800x600 and say, 500kb?
Plenty big enough for web viewing, and will reduce load times.

Having said that, just flicked back to check progress of my image upload and I seem to have a cloud error....
Error message posted under /Meta/Sandbox thread

Thanks for giving it a play - much appreciated.

Yes, there's a "trust" system in place to stop spammers really. I had a quick looks - seems there's a number of different ways to quickly jump up the trust level from 0 to 1 - reading posts, spending a small amount of time on site etc. I imagine it'll work better when there's more users and content available. IF it needs tweaking it's easy for me to do, but I'll stick with the defaults for now.

Max attachment / image size is 3 mb. Again, easy for me to change, but I don't want to make this too big as I'm paying to store it all ;)

Regarding error - first one I've seen so I'm hoping it was a connectivity issue. Will keep an eye on it. Let me know if it keeps happening!

Nice one then.
Don't be afraid.
Im keen to log in with a new UserName and start my own threads.
Happy to hear all my old threads will be stored for viewing.

Go hard, start of something good.

I certainly think it could be the start of something good - seems to be taking it to the next level!

All the email issues are sorted now. Seems all the ones marked as really important for registration purposes were getting backed up in a queue somewhere. The less important ones were getting sent though :P

And if people want to post links back to old threads here = no problem as if the consensus is to move to the new platform then I'll make sure all the info cpatured here is preserved and can be linked to.

An idea that i have been pondering over for a while - just an idea tho, see if i can explain it.

A thread which is exclusive to those who have there own page/thread.
Like Show Tell and Identify but more suited to the above.

This way these pages wont get lost in a que and it would probably inspire more talk back.
More talk back and pictures would bring things inline with that FB type thing - possibly.

Thanks for putting all that work on new forums Gavin.

When you fully start it up you might want to personally approve the account creations for a short period, that way former users of Paydirt can ensure their user name is not taken by someone else.

No problem, if there's a dispute over usernames I can edit them. Preference given to existing users of forum already using the username of course.

I must admit, I don't fully understand what you're after (maybe sticky threads that stay at the top?). But make a post under the Site Feedback category and we can nut out the details and explore how we can make something happen if it's something a few people would like.

With sticky threads I imagine after you've got a fair few then new conversations might get lost and unanswered below them?

I think the community.paydirt.co.nz (using Discourse platform) does this really well. One of the reasons I'm keen to experiment with it.

Cheers for giving it a go! I don't have an iPhone to test with I'm afraid so can't experiment myself. If drag and drop doesn't work from the phone, can you use the toolbar to manually upload instead? (still easier than this forum) You can also paste web links in that point to images on the web and they will automatically be embedded and shown as an image.
