I normally post on my own page..but after finding these today i just had to put a new thread...Im not sure if they are from a ship wreak or what..but they arnt NZ coins....i took a pic of them all together..then cleaned them a little and took seperat pics..
One coin has what i assume is a date....it says feb 1577..now the second 7 is bigger than the other numbers so is it year 157 month 7..or is it 1577....the b in feb is also a bit bigger than the other 2 letters...alltogether i got 13 coins but recon there is more there..

Now those pictures are as clear as mud so identification of any sort is shall we say impossible - if clear photographs of both sides are put up then there is a good chance that they can be identified.

If they are 1577 you might even rewrite New Zealands history as the discoverer of the Spanish Invasion of the Antipodes although of course if its the year 157 then it might mean that the Romans got here before the Spanish...this of course would lend considerable credence to the book about the Celtic occupation which someone wrote as the possible result of Opium derived hallucinations resulting form the discovery and sampling of a bottle of Davis's Patent Pain Killer, Universal Panacea for all ills or maybe an overdose of 'Ellimans Embrocation for Horses Manufactury Slough' which was just as effective apparently on humans.

Better pictures Chris...please!

If they are real it is a significant find you have there NZP.
What do you think they are made of?

Hmm a smart buggger was putting clearer photos on as I was writing the above - good one!

As for the coins "Err, Um, yes well lets see" - the judges decision will be announced soon but not necessarily the truth.

unfortunatlly graham,i dont have a good camera..but may get robert to retake the pics next time he comes up as he has a good camera.
But that one deffinatly has the word feb and 1577 after it..so i am asuming that is a date of some sort..

Metal kiwi i can only also asume they are real as they are very crusted and i had to gently scrub with tooth brush just to get some of the crust of them...
as for what they are made of im not sure..but some are copper color and some are goldy color although not solid gold for sure.

Some of the ones in the 2nd set of photos definitely have Greek writing on them.

These were a beach find rather than a park find, I assume?

Freaky! Congrats!

It's a long way for a 2nd century abandoned Greek ship to drift before finally hitting land!

Maybe you should send some pics to the university or museum or someone.
As I said before if they are real and that age it is significant NZ history eh.

When I was a teenager I had a cardboard display of replica roman coins. The coins were inset into the board and descriptions were alongside. They could be replicas. If these are real coins they would be the most exicting things found in nz! If not they are still very cool things to find.

If it was me I would have to find out quick one way or the other.
(Don't tell any Greeks though as they would want them back to pay
national debt) lol.
