giday just bought a gold bug off the dealer here in nz, im pretty sure he is also a member of the forum.

im after a few pointers on how to use it and set it up etc, its main use will be for gold,

so id be keen to catch up with someone who knows a bit about detecting for gold in the otago region and head out for a trip with them ( not after your secret spot but it would be nice) to a spot where there is a reasonable chance of finding a wee bit of gold,

im based in dunedin but head up into central frequently when im not working, any help in getting started would be appreciated,

also what extra coils would be worth getting to help get the most out of it? it currently has the standard 5" DD coil

if you are going after gold it is the 5"DD that you want....you can also get the 11"dd that makes it a dam good coin/relic hunter..but the 5 inch is best for the gold as it alows you to get into tight spots.

Hi there Cam, In all honesty.....your best teacher is time & getting out there using it. Read the manual on your detector. Youtube is bound to have some footage on what you ask as to the detector itself. As to locations, not many if any are going to tell you of there favourite spots. Unless they feel they have cleaned it out. Your best bet is to go where gold has been found before. That shouldnt be hard to find in Otago. Make sure the areas you go dont have a claim & if private property get permission to do what you want to do on it. Target bed rock in old sluicings & alluvial gold mined areas. If the overburden is more than a few inches you may well have a difficult task. Bed rock is the key.
Detecting for gold is a big learning curve. Good luck.

Happy hunting

JW :)

What I suggest to people, and it helped me a lot with my Gold Bug, is to read the manual. It won’t help much but read it anyway, and then go out and start digging up every signal. You will soon get the hang of it. Then go back and read the manual again and it will make a lot more sense. At this point you will be able to refine your technique and get the most out of the machine. Although if you can find someone willing to show you the ropes that would save you a lot of time. Detecting is a bit of an art though and takes some time to figure out.

i do know a wee bit about gold and know of quite a number of old workings that im guessing most everybody else knows of in otago an dmaybe a couple of others that arent really known,

the problem is im not sure if there ever was large nuggety styled gold ever found in those areas, that, and one of them ive been shooting quail around for years, and so has my oldman since he was a young fella, so you'd get really sick of digging lead up, that is across the other side of the manuhirakia river at alex there.

as for the learning im planing on it being time consuming but the more i can fast track it the better, and also it might be a way to forge new friendships in something that has such a small following
