Hey folks, I'm officially in auckland now. Had a spare moment today and went down to the local beach for a swing. Gold bug seriously hates the wet sand...... On the dry sand I managed the 'treasures' below, it can only get better but I was not able to hunt good parts of the beach. Curiously I did find a lot of iron junk right on the surface, the kind of stuff that is reasonably heavy too. I think a storm must have stirred things up a fair bit there to have heavies on top like that??

I forgot to mention, a guy with wife and kids stopped to talk to to me at the beach. First people to do so. Turns out they were tonznz's sister and brother in law! Fancy that. Tonznz used to frequent this forum, many of you know him. Cheers

She's a small world @ times. I meet both Tonznz and #8 Wire last weekend for the first time, both top blocks.
Good luck with the detecting in Auckland.

Nice one Hatter. Bit of extra competition for the Auckland lads. Good luck out there.

So I bought a new (second hand) Minelab Sovereign. I bought it from a forum member and was very pleased with the condition of the detector and excellent packaging. Today I took it down to the beach and found the detector to be very easy to use. Well I still have a lot to learn regarding where things are on the beach but it was a bit of fun nonetheless. I was a bit surprised to be finding live ammo at the beach though! And large calibres too!
No sign of any gold or silver today though. Cheers

I knw who that remark is pointed at bedrock..and I didn't say they were great because I sell them...all I said was that I have had no probs with mine at the beach..

I allways ground balanced in the wet sand then was able to hunt from in the water right up to the sand dunes with very little extra noise..and def nothing I couldn't work through..

And here are 2 pics of the fake old coins I found on the beach with my goldbug....now I have said this befor but will say it again...I have only hunted brighton beach CHCH with my goldbug and it worked great there for me...may not work great at all beaches as I read in others post including this one....but im not going to say it is shit when it wasn't for me..

Now back to the post..congrats on the move hatter..hope you find heaps up there and give them boys a run for there money

OOOOH not this topic again. Sure the gold bug can be made to kind of work at the beach but it really is not where it excels.
The Sovereign runs smooth without any sign of instability right across the beach, regardless of how wet the sand is. The gold bug definitely falses a lot
unless you dumb it down and ground balance in saturated sand but then I found it loses a lot of depth and sensitivity.
Don't get me wrong I love my gold bug to bits and would recommend it to anyone for gold detecting in rivers.

Not finding the same numbers of coins I used to in Dunedin!!!
Nice silver pendant in the mix though to spice things up.
Cheers

Sadly not opal, its more translucent than it looks in the photo. I think it may be labradorite?? but I'm no gem expert. Will be back to that part of the beach tomorrow. The tide was covering up the good spot I think. Well the spot where I was getting above average numbers of targets. Also got the 1922 penny there.

Nice bit of bling, well done, would definitely get me excited. Stone could also be moonstone - but I'm no expert either. NUGGY

Silver and gold in one hit! Ring is stamped STG 9ct. Presumably the two bands are the gold.
Also a nicely encrusted sixpence. From same spot as last night.
Like my Sov!!!

So I have no internet at home at the moment, am sneakily doing this message at work... I went to the beach Saturday morning and had a pretty good run. I went down 1 hour before low tide till 1 hour after, so two hours all up. I managed to get 5 rings in total and a junk earring, the rings were as follows. 18KGP, STG, STG, TI STG with 3 diamonds (titanium with a stg band running around it) and a 9ct gold ring. Will post a picture as soon as internet is sorted at home.

Cheers!!
