WOW.....That is outstandingly exceptional. Truely a once in a life time experience & a moment you will never forget. What a find. Very well done. All shield backs too. I wonder who, why & how they lost those. Thanks for sharing your story. :)

Good luck out there

JW :)

Bloody magic mate. I go away for the weekend and come back to find you've cleaned up Christchurchs gold lol. From your story it sounds like someone was in a hurry, maybe making a get away across the park. The mind boggles. Well done bud.

To say I am insane with jealousy vastly understates the situation since I never even dreamed of finding that many sovs in one day, freaking awesome!

Cheers mate but I think we all know that there's no way I'll be topping that any time soon.
I guess the moral in all this (for what it's worth) is not to give up on what might seem an impossibility. I'm a great believer in the old "putting it out there " theory, and it seems to work.
I was just saying in a thread a couple of weeks ago about a sovereign hoard that was found in Dunedin back in the 50's, and how you should never stop believing that you could be the next finder....the universe works in mysterious ways!

Hey dude, appreciate the thought.
If I hadn't been so shell-shocked at the time, I might have had the presence of mind to do the same.......however shaky and incoherent it would have turned out!

After digging one of the sov's the other day, Jason said to me "Ya know mate, it really makes you think......Just imagine.......the city was just in it's absolute infancy when those coins were lost probably 150 + years ago"

Since then, I've been trying to imagine how, why and under what circumstances the coins ended up being lost all those years ago. Was it just a hole in a pocket, a robbery gone wrong.... or something far more sinister...we'll never know for sure. What we do know is that it was one hell of a lot of money to lose back in the 1860's and would have put the owner through some real hardship I would imagine.
I reckon they must have been lost around that time because they show such little wear for 1850's coins.
Anyway, I thought I'd share a pic or two of how Christchurch would have looked around that time.
I find that looking at pics like this only help to fuel the imagination even further!

Good luck out there.

Amazing find man, truly amazing. How much was the average yearly wage in 1860? What percentage would 4 and a half sovs be of that? Like you said, it must have been a huge loss to someone.
