well it's still gold!!

I have been unable to get away fossicking which is driving me mad coming up with dreams and ideas on how to do it and where to go so I have been detecting a local area and have pulled nearly 80 silver coins with the F2...well 3 days ago I finally pulled some yellow metal up from a depth of 6 inches. Beautiful oldish patterned gold locket. Yum Yum!

well done mate, nice looking locket. i have yet to get some gold with the detector, what sort of signal dit the gold give you compared to silver? On my detector silver comes up usually over 70 so ive really been just digging things above that.

Cheers and well done!
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

On my detector (F75) the signal depends on the size of the object. For example a silver three pence reads 44 (same as a pull tab) and a silver six pence 55-57. A round silver pin the size of a dollar reads 71. I figured out that I was missing things because I had the discrimination too higher expecting the high conductive metals to read higher but that is not neccesarily the case. I found a small gold ladys watch that reads 59 which is about the same as a half penny. A penny (same bronze material as a half penny) reads 78-80. So again I think it depends on how big it is.

Ok great thanks for that rgmcbrid, I went for a trip with graham the other day. Had a look at some historic gold ining places, we didnt get any gold but found some nice chuncks of scheelite. He tells me you will be coming down when the weather is a bit better to have look 4 some gold o his place, that should be a bit of fun its a nice place up there if you like.... isolation, im not sure if thats the right word perhaps peace and quiet is a better description.
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

That's a great find MSB.
Congoldulations.
Your silver tally sounds pretty good too - 80 coins - wow.
Looking forward to more pics.

I use a site called photobucket.com to upload the pics to after I have re-sized them to 800x600 (makes for better viewing on here)

once uploaded you copy the direct link (its self explanatory once on the photobucket website) and you click the wee pic above with the small mountains on it (add img) then you paste the direct link inbetween the img tag

Different area's will always give different tones in relation to the minerals surrounding the item. But generally they remain close to what you are used to them toning in it.

this locket was solid 67. Good items will usually remain solid and not bounce around. I find a lot of thruppences and they tend to bounce from 44 to 54. Most pull tabs are 39 to 43. Most old school 20's 50's and half crown non silvers are usually 45 to 47.

The best thing to find gold is dig EVERY signal. if anything it helps clean up the shit for potential signals that are being masked anyway AND you are doing you bit for helping clean NZ :)

The 2nd best thing to do is dig EVERY signal for at least the first half hour in ANY ground the you get an idea of how signals are reacting to their surroundings and then you can choose to ignore some.

I use a Fisher F2 with 11" DD coil and I use it full power and nly discriminate out the very first bar which is shitty irons etc

I DO find that I get signals which sound awesome but then bounce low to 41 31 and then back up. these are usually bastard tinfoil old milk tops. i hate them like I hate 1 & 2 c coins :) BUT they must be dug anyway as could be a cool relic or even gold.

Happy Hunting :)

I like finding 1 and 2 cent coins, I feel like I have actually found something. What I hate are flattened screw tops because they really sound like something good. When I dig up pull tabs I know there is about a 98% chance that it is a pull tab, but the screw caps fool me.

Haha nope but 1/ it's interesting that you found such a random piece of jewellery you gold hound you haha and 2/ its awesome that you now have dated the piece for me..I knew it was old due to depth I found it but both those being 1946 is a given :). All mine has on the back is 9ct and a small makers mark which is worn...no inscriptions.

Also the gold buyer in Timaru offered me $40 for it yesterday but I think I will get slightly more online for it now

Cheers

Interesting that that one has "V.T. 18.2.46" engraved on it.

Not many people with those initials.

Only one person born in that year (Violet Turner). 5 deaths but most likely one would be Valerie Tanner who died at 1 day old. Other options are Vivian Treweek, Victoria Trevethick, Violet Taylor or Virginia Taumata (who also died at 1 day old).

No matching marriages.

Wow oroplata, you are a pretty good detective! What do you make of this pin found on a sports field? STG.SIL os the only thing stamped on the back.

That one looks a little tricky. As there is only one period, at the end, it might mean "representative 1960" rather than someones initials. Especially since you found it on a sports field :)
