How careful do you need to be coin hunting in parks & vacant house sites etc?

Obviously being hassled won't be an issue if the park is remote/quiet.
I'm sure you are all making pockets (rather than plugs) - that can't be spotted once filled.

No reason why you would get hassled if you have owners permission on vacant sections.
As for parks, I'd be leaving the grass well alone this time of year (unless you've had a lot more rain than me!) and be working in the undergrowth with a small coil and wireless phones.

If you treat every target like you are leaving an IED behind then you should have no worries, that is asides from local councils over stepping their authority -

From the Police - "it is not illegal to metal detect on public property as long as you do NOT cause any damage" -
If you do then they WILL prosecute - If you adhere to this then you will have no problems

Take a camera with you for your own safety and record everything if confronted - Councils like anyone can be charged with harrassment - Also if you are getting some grief from you local council ask them who they employ to pick up the dangerous littler left behind by the contractors they employ? - You see they have their own rules to adhere to, so if push comes to shove...........??

All that aside - get out there and enjoy yourself

On the odd occasion I have been confronted I show them my bucket of trash ( broken glass, rusty nails etc ) then they can see that I am actually providing a service. I have even been thanked after the initial grumpy approach.

Thats great, I was more concerned with the general public giving me the once over.
Though I am very careful with my holes - but at some stages they look horribly huge.

I don't usually detect in parks only if it's completely empty because kids always try to steal your finds. I only detect in homesites with permission.

Oh though I'm not all that good at digging plugs... Only in spring. Perfect time for detecting. I don't really have many parks to go to though.

I tried a few parks today.
Getting a lot of interference - possibly wifi? from across the road?
Also very messy with many dodgy signals - iron, wire.
I ended up turning Iron Reject on.
Got myself a pull tab, also 20cm hole with nothing - gave up digging (pointer wasn't indicating).
Found one of the things that is worse than a pull tab - foil drink seal.

It was rough going too as there was a 5cm layer of Kaikuyu.

Actually, I got some children to dig holes for me at a beach. They had great fun - got some steel from the inside of a tyre.
If I ever had some trouble, I'd simply explain that they would be unlikely to find anything (I have enough trouble locating targets with a pointer), and they'd be likely to simply dig the target out unbeknownst to themselves.

I know! At a park I had so many kids dig for me... Then run away with the finds... Good thing I didn't find anything great... Lol.

And they ask stupid questions like "maybe it's detecting the bark" so I give up.

Got warned off western springs rugby field tonight, will try at 3am.

There are too many targets in these parks & I'm sick of lying down digging 20-30cm deep holes with my trowel for junk & 1 cents. Soon I'll have to check myself for ticks! I'm going to take a spade next time.

I'm not sure about the rugby field at western springs but the parks around the lake are definitely a protected area and big fines can be given to anyone caught digging there.

I would be careful there at night. When I was working nights for a security company that spot was a notorious location for um well...dudes who like to do things with other anonymous dudes If you know what I mean.
So just be careful about laying facedown on the dirt while digging targets too close to that toilet block in the dark... someone may mistake it for a invitation.

Easy with the spade there. Maybe just try diggin the shallow targets for a while, a lot quicker.

There are NO shallow targets - pretty sure a while ago someone has been over the area.
Spade is far less destructive (using slit cut method) than with a hand trowel, at 20cm+ depths.

That park is dark & scary - easy to hide in though.
Pretty sure all the gays are on an app now called Grindr.
I have my Mallet (and spade) if I encounter any trouble.

Please don't ruin the hobby for everyone by digging in restricted/protected areas.

I was only going to detect around the edges.
However, they put up massive venue tents - and dug two 1 metre square Hangi pits.
I'm doing less damage & and invisible work in comparison two both of those activities.

Ahh it makes sense now. They were still remediating the site that day.
You were technicaly tresspassing on a work site and creating a hazard.
If you had just done a fast surface scan for fresh drops without digging you probably would have been okay.
Remember that festival would have had a permit for those activities and part of that permit would be to restore grassed surfaces so the sight of you digging 20cm+ holes possibly got someone a bit excited.
