Hi team in Minelab,
I have been using Excalibur 2 for a year before changing to CTX3030 and was really pleased with the way battery pack was connecting to the unit.

My current details (as per warranty registration):
Product Details
Type: complete
Product: CTX 3030
Coil Serial Number: 40482506614
Control Box Serial Number: 40446506399
Secondary Coil Serial Number:
Accessory Serial Numbers:

since changing to CTX3030, i am facing same issue everybody else do when detecting in the water :

* every time i need to charge/change battery i have to remove the "O-Ring" , clean it and put back in place. (to remove all the sand that goes into the surrounding area)

I have just returned from 1 week Holiday at Rarotonga where i have been detecting for over 30 hours and needed to charge the unit twice, and twice i was at the risk of damaging O-Ring when extracting from the unit.

I strongly believe that it is design failure. So based on that, please read on my Enquiry/complaint request :

Being based in New Zealand, Auckland, We (CTX3030 users) would like Minelab to send free replaceable O-Rings to our Local trusted dealer :

DetectNZ
Unit D
4 Charann Place, Avondale
Auckland
1026
New Zealand
Phone: +64 9 8204969
Web: http://www.detectnz.co.nz

So we can pick them up free of charge when we need them (My friend and i, both 3030 users are going to Tropical spot again in August and would like to have at least 1 spare "0-ring" per person with us)

Please Advice at your earliest convenience when such small request can be fulfilled
Please Note, you feedback will be published on Both, NZ metal detecting Forums and Australia Metal Detecting forums :

What size o-rings are they? Wouldn't they be cheap to buy locally eg under $1? I realise you shouldn't have to buy them but if it needs to be done then what's a few cents?
Or are they quite big o-rings which are hard to get right size?

Just as a thought about a backup if the letter doesn't work - but how about using a lot of silicon grease around the seal when putting the battery back on?. The excess grease should squeeze out but this is OK as it will stop the sand getting onto the seal when its opened again. Especially if the detector is hosed down before taking off the battery.

The silicon grease can be brought from diving shops or plumbing specialists.

The problem is, that once you need to recharge battery- you have to clean all that shit out again, and apply Lube once more... it is never ending process.

... P.s. we are not talking about this lube:

Obviously that bit was designed by the marketing dept rather than the engineering dept.

That all depends on how much you "love" your detector but I was suggesting putting it on the join and not the shaft...... You can always just have a cold shower with it to wash off the sand. :)

May be a never ending process but it looks like a bit of a design fault so I doubt any solutions until the next version is designed. Alternative to silicon grease - can you run some tape around the join??

Yes I see now, not exactly a common o-ring.
Hmmm.

With the Garretts AT range the 0-ring gets dry and pinches (coil and headphone sockets) and of course isn't as watertight.
As Shilo said the silicone grease is the same as what is used on dive gear.
Problem is as DB has found it's a sand and grit magnet.

could try teflon bike lube stays wet for a short time then air drys, not so much sticking sand,or just wrap some tape around the exposed areas after you clip the battery in.

Have to admit Latch's idea seems a pretty simple solution.

simple solution is glad wrap the sucka lol,i have to wonder what theese o-ring are made of because normal o-rings degrade in tempeture not abrasion,i personally would look into getting some made of a black rubber,i would look at making them myself if it came to that as i have before.

I think the suggestion above - maybe one wrap of insulation tape before hitting the beach....I know not ideal....maybe give that a try?? Dale

MINELAB REPLY

Hello Max,

Thank you for your email about the CTX battery seal.

We realise the maintenance required on this waterproof seal can be time consuming, but it is the only way to ensure the waterproof integrity of the battery compartment is maintained.

The below link to a product notice on our website details this

http://www.minelab.com/a...t-notices?article=109061

Seal kits are available via your dealer which include three battery seals and two headphone socket seals. We have checked with Detect NZ and they have one in stock for your ongoing maintenance needs.

Kind regards

Minelab Customer Care Team

So it sort of reads. Thanks for spending your hard earned cash with us, we appreciate that you have had to work many hours to purchase our product and would like extend our thanks as we haven't finished with you yet!

Remember the bike inner tube tip for the Garrett Pro Pointers, wonder if a motorbike tube would be another idea for your machine.

MY REPLY TO MINELAB :

Thank you for your reply,
However it doesn't answer my inquiry in a straight forward format about having O-Rings free of charge as you pointing to purchase the product from a local dealer.

The pack you are referring to is 25$ and ,sorry, but that is way too much for 3 O-rings, when units are purchased at over 3000$ price mark
While O-rings for diving equipment are just 5-10 cents per piece from diving shops and the prices for:
O-Ring 407 piece Rubber Workshop Assortment Kit - is about 30$ , but due to minelab patent design , none of current O-rings fit the unit.

Once again, on behalf of wide community of CTX3030 users in Auckland, New Zealand we are asking for FREE stock of O-rings to Our local dealer, so an individual ctx3030 user can pick one up for general maintenance .

That would reduce the risk of leaks for us and so less warranty claims.

p.s. i will be prepared to BUY an advertised product ,but at price no higher than 5$

Please advise what would be Minelab position on this one.
Regards,
Max and many other local ctx3030 users

Try Sealhouse, think they have an Auckland base, they advertise being able to supply or make any seal.
Take them a sample, I don't have their Auckland phone number, but they have a website. http://www.sealhouse.co.nz/
Could design a better seal with them, buy in bulk cheap and sell on to other ctx3030 owners.
