I want to give the member ranking on these forums more of a fun gold theme.

At present these are the default ranks:

Newbie
Member
Advanced Member

(BTW: We're not limited to 3 ranks so don't let that limit your ideas)

Any ideas? Some quick ideas of my own:

1) Gold sizes: Gold flour, Gold flake, Gold picker, Gold nugget.
2) Equipment: Pan, sluice box, dredge.
3) Experience: From green newbie to old timer - but what are the gold miner equivalents?

Not sure about my ideas - anyone have some more interesting / fun ideas?

Using the mining terms from the days of the gold rushes seems the best bet if you do want to change it but ball is really in your court Gavin.

In terms of information sharing the mode of operation would be useful eg Fossicker claim holder (suction dredge) claim holder (machinery) etc.rather then in terms of percieved ego status.eg

fossicker (F)

Claim holder suction (CHS)

claim holder machinery (CHM) etc etc

Many of us are into all modes, methods and means of gold recovery! - that would give us personality disorders!

Our main intersts are reflected in the topics we take part in or contribute to - however it would not be amiss to have in our profiles the abbreviations for main interests so that we have name then De, Dr, F etc but there are so many methods of gold recovery or criteria you might use - Detecting, Fossicker, Dredger, Riffle Box, Commercial, Hobbyist, Claim holder and so on...you can even have Claim Jumper or Trespasser because I bet theres a few of them on here but I say that tongue in cheek because they wouldnt admit it!

why not just keep it simple and have something like the star system on trade me, ie. larger brighter stars for big shots, puny little stars for newcomers.

and maybe some sort of symbol system that can represent the basic tiers of claim holder, dredger, sluiceboxer, panner etc.

i like lammerlaw's suggestion of claim jumper, so maybe that would be of use.

i used to have this guy jump my holes when i first started out. i was in a local spot that gets so much attention its not funny. did a few summers there honing my skills with a sluicebox and pan and met lots of interesting people.

anyhow, this one guy realised i was there nearly daily as thus figured i was "onto something". in reality i was just filling in time between work as i was oncall. i had been digging some huge holes so it looked promising. thus this dude would come and "test" my workings. pissed me off at the time but worth a laugh now. there was a bit of gold there but as always it takes a bit of work to recover it.

maybe "tourist with golden eyes" would be be another suggestion. or more appropriately, "freedom prospector". this seems to be a new breed of prospector. Same as freedom camper but now into mining also. piss me off when they park up for weeks and finally leave with all their rubbish left behind. usually like jumping in next to you and often silent as their english no good eh. also worth a laugh. one guy last summer used a plastic plate and a stick - for several days. i told him he needed some equipment. turned up next day with a toddlers sand pit spade. mentioned it wasn't very durable. same dude was there for weeks. showed me what he got. a speck a day i think.

Simon - your quote

I dont like them shits who arrive, crap in the bush and beyond and dont bury it, rubbish everywhere - in the big scheme of it all we need a 'Sherriff' and a 'Hangman' - just my sick sense of humour - and it is sick - like the time I let of a thunderflash outside a bedroom window at one in the morning during what later transpired to be a 'critical moment'

Cheers for the suggestions guys, been a little distracted as my home in Chch is in a red zone - bugga. Will get back on to this soon ;) Just a fun little touch I figured would be easy to add as it's just a quick configuration tweak for the site.

I'm leaning towards gold sizes so far myself:
Gold dust
Gold flake
Gold nugget

Will put the ideas to the vote soon!
