Hi kiwijw, nice posts thanks, i just got myself a second hand 300, i have been using a 100 till now. do you think it's better to use the 300 in all metal mode rather than any discrimination? the 100 is a single control no display, discrimination only no sensitivity and i've just run it on a low discrimination or all metal. i've dug a lot of foil!!

Cheers, Maverick.

The Garrett Ace 250 is available in NZ.
There is a dealer in Auckland and another down the line a bit.
I think they may also be on trade me.
A great lightweight machine that finds all sorts.
Just thought you may like to know.

Sheesh, Anyone would think you were the first person to run a detector over that beach consider your haul!

How far is it done to bedrock? Must be some interesting stuff down there waiting to be found.

Bedrock is the target to aim for! Got 3 gold and 3 silver rings (along with various silver coins)this week because a local beach had eroded down to its clay base in a small area.

The newer Ace series are Ok in the dry sand but are not meant to be that great in damp sand. If you can spring for a detector with salt cancellation or has one that has good manual ground balance then it will be worth it in the long run. My AT Pro took a month to pay for itself, so if you are willing to put in the effort the returns will be there.

Eagle, These rings worked out to be 3.7g of 9ct, 3g of 9ct and 4.8g of 18ct with a nice rock. In pure gold terms $367.72 melt value. Not bad for a couple of hours a night de-stressing after work. Pics and write ups are on my blog: http://islanddetecting.blogspot.com/

Kiwijw, no bedrock, but is there any firm and dark or black sand showing especially below the high tide mark? Like gold in a river this will mean all the light sand has moved on leaving just the heavy stuff (inc sinkers and gold rings).

Kiwijw, Thanks for the comment about the blog. Just updated with yet another gold ring as well as a silver that I found this morning.

My dream machine is winging its way over from the states now - a Whites V3i. As you said no machine will do everything, and the V3i can't be used in the water but for an all round machine it is the best I could find because it can be tuned and programmed to specialise in what I am after at the time. The down side is that the learning curve is very steep and complicated. The AT works well enough for wading so hanging on to it.

If any beginner is looking for a gold machine but is on a restricted budget and has to settle for a VLF machine, then look for one with the highest frequency you can. Gold has low conductivity so the higher the frequency the more chance of finding small gold. For example the Ace 350 which is a great coin machine only has 8.25khz, it will pick up a ring but struggle with an earring or a nugget. The AT Pro is much better at 15khz, Gold Bug better still at 19khz and the V3i at 22.5khz (among others - multi frequency). But with each rise in frequency there is a rise in the price.....

I agree that the hobby is not about making money. But with perseverance what it can do is pay for itself. After the initial cost of getting set up the finds should reimburse this cost, then additional finds can go towards upgrading to a better machine and accessories. To do this though you have to get out there as often as possible. If you enjoy the hobby like I do then its no hardship. Also agree about opening up history - I have learnt some amazing things about the area I live.
